Simply Business

PRIMARY FUNCTION:
Business Card Templates

INSPIRATION:
Simply business is a project that has been created in the ideal of geometric simplicity. The main goal was to create easily editable business card templates that highlight the information of the client. Motivation for this project came from one of my clients who wanted a simple template for the workers of his small business.

UNIQUE PROPERTIES / PROJECT DESCRIPTION:
Simply business is a design project that includes several business card templates. All the designs are based on geometric shapes. The main idea is to create a new line of business cards that highlight the most important parts of a business card: the information of the client. These easily editable templates were designed as an effort to communicate that often the simplest approach is the best.

OPERATION / FLOW / INTERACTION:
Basically the designs in this series belong to a line of business card templates. Each and every design was created with a geometric aesthetic. They can be used by a wide range of business types and business owners with different personalities and niches. Their main purpose is to display the client's information in a simple, well readable yet appealing manner.

PROJECT DURATION AND LOCATION:
The project started in September 2014 and went on for several months but ultimately finished in December 2017. It has been tested and re-tested with the help of several small-business owners and re-designed or slightly corrected a couple of times. There have been some modifications recently and I am currently working on some new variations.

Graphics, Illustration and Visual Communication Design

PRODUCTION / REALIZATION TECHNOLOGY:
Digital vector design with some printing technique incorporated. For my first set of cards I made several sketches and designed as much as twenty different templates of which I currently use the best eight. Via creating the calendar I used DIN font. After the finishing touches were added to the design, client information is added and the actual cards could be printed. They are printed with the use of paper that weighs 350 g/m2.

SPECIFICATIONS / TECHNICAL PROPERTIES:
The designs follow the European standard size of business cards, but could be reproduced in other sizes as well. The main designs are about 9 centimeters high and 5 centimeters wide. There are also two colour varieties too; black with white letters and the inverse. The weight is neglegable since the cards are made of paper.

TAGS:
business card, stationary, stationery, geometric, minimalistic, name card

RESEARCH ABSTRACT:
Most of the research has been conducted by browsing creative business card websites and looking through self-made collections of stationary items. I also conducted several interviews with clients and other small-business owners - by collecting and reviewing their feedbacks on several sketches, I gained valuable knowledge. The main conclusion was that most business owners wanted to have their information displayed in a professional, yet simple manner with some added design elements that do not draw more attention than the actual information. I tried out a couple of designs which incorporated certain visual elements in different manners (white spaces, size and readability). After this and a new round of feedbacks, I settled with my final one. With a distinct image of the final outcome in my head I researched fonts using the following parameters: sans serif, harmonic letters based on DIN fonts.

CHALLENGE:
The first obstacle was to come over the issues of readability, clarity and creativity and the implementation of all of these at the same time. I also haven't found many similar projects during my research, so incorporating simple geometric elements and making the design as appealing as one could be became an experimental activity.
