DESIGN DETAILS
DESIGN NAME:
Roots

PRIMARY FUNCTION:
Home desk

INSPIRATION:
Roots is a home desk inspired in the Sacred Ceiba tree in Havana. A line that revolves around a volume leaving traces with different expressions, just like a root of that tree, intercepted with a volume on top. Roots reinterprets that geometry in a contemporary design. In the top half a volume intercepts with this geometry and it presents us a surface in a contrasting material. Complex look with lots of handcrafted mastery. It is not just a desk, it is a piece of art.

UNIQUE PROPERTIES / PROJECT DESCRIPTION:
Interpreting nature is a long tradition in design. The uniqueness of this desk is that its inspiration was taken to the limit. Different materials intercept revealing the true mastering of the artisans. What makes this design unique is the woodworkers that made it possible. It is a testament to their commitment to take an idea and make it possible, producing with patience, art and craftsmanship, making such a beautiful piece of art that you will want to have it at home, not in the office.

OPERATION / FLOW / INTERACTION:
We can look at this table from many perspectives. If we forget all the emotional side, it's just a desk, to be placed in a quiet room or corner. It has a clearly defined role and fulfill it without blemish. But if we try to be more ambitious, then it is not just a table. It's a piece of nature that we have inside our home, which interacts with us in many different ways.

PROJECT DURATION AND LOCATION:
The first drawing of this object was done in December 2013, Porto, Portugal. After several technical studies and prototypes, almost three years later, the final model were concluded in early 2017 and presented at Maison et Objet, in Paris, that January.

PRODUCTION / REALIZATION TECHNOLOGY:
As always in our designs, Roots can't be made in large production due to its design. To produce this desk we have a combination of highly skilled artisans with laser cut technology and router cutting techniques. Manual and skilled work is a component without which this design wouldn't be possible. It should also be highlighted that this desk can be custom-made - different types of wood as well as lacquered steel in different colours are also options.

SPECIFICATIONS / TECHNICAL PROPERTIES:
Home desk: 155 cm x 70 cm x 74 cm. Wood: Zebrano, Walnut, Ironwwood, Tineo or Lacquer. Metal: Polished stainless steel or Lacquered steel. This product is delivered fully assembled in wooden crates. Weight: 95 Kg.

RESEARCH ABSTRACT:
Although Roots has been inspired in the Sacred Trees of Cuba, its origins have walked in our minds for a long time. We sought to draw an object whose design was so strong to represent its inspiration, in this case, the tree. These Objects are not designed for specific clients. Emotional Objects make our inspiration come true, it could be a special tree, a smell or a song. However, it is necessary to make it real, and that is, probably, the most creative obstacle to overcome or to push the design into its limit, without following trends.

CHALLENGE:
The main difficult of this object was its implementation because technically it is a desk of great complexity. Different studies and prototypes were made so that the object could be sturdy. The technology and construction processes are the most advanced available in the market, which is, nevertheless, ironic for an object that tries to simulate nature. Alongside the laser cutting and CNC methods, are also necessary skills and knowledge of more traditional joinery, particularly in the assembly of the piece and finishing.

CLIENT/STUDIO/BRAND DETAILS
NAME:
Emotional Objects

PROFILE:
Emotional Objects is a new brand of decorative objects, born by the hand of an architect, which had his world debut at Maison et Objet Paris, in January 2016. After nearly twenty years of work in the field, in 2012, João Faria created the Emotional Objects concept as a way to produce and market his own objects. This brand, made of different pieces from butter dishes to office furniture or Bluetooth speakers, will produce only 99 objects. Then the project will be finished. With an important component of craftsmanship, the twenty-six objects developed until now take design to its limits, with no compromises and a great attention to detail. The author´s intention is to make objects that connect to people, create a relationship with their owners and cause an emotional response.
