DESIGN DETAILS
DESIGN NAME:
Antalis

PRIMARY FUNCTION:
Calendar

INSPIRATION:
A paper called Conqueror was created in Scotland in 1888. When we were searching for a theme for our 2018 calendar to represent the beauty of Conqueror papers, our gaze landed on the number 8. What else could have been the main theme of our design, if not the number 8? It brings good luck, it is a symbol of the perfection of all things eternal. Even its shape is unusual, it loops, as if never ending.

UNIQUE PROPERTIES / PROJECT DESCRIPTION:
We decided to treat the number 8 as a minimalist design, inspired by its significance, its symbolism, and sometimes just driven by chance associations. It was the springboard for twelve designs that join to make a tale of paper, print, and design. A key factor was that our studio works with print as well as design. This project was the perfect match for an important facet of our approach to design, print, and paper, as three inseparable parts in creating the final product.

OPERATION / FLOW / INTERACTION:
From the outset, we were determined not to limit this product to the form of a desk calendar. We wanted to make it more functional and give it a longer life span than a single year. The first premise was to allow the pages to be easily removed and used separately, to be hung on the wall, for example, as art prints. The second premise was to make the calendar also function as a swatch book, for presenting Conqueror papers and some marvelous print technologies. The solution was to use a gold binding screw, which is also a supplement to the design.

PROJECT DURATION AND LOCATION:
The project started in October 2017 and finished in December 2017. Design and printing: Kolory Krakow, Poland.

FITS BEST INTO CATEGORY:
Graphics, Illustration and Visual Communication Design

PRODUCTION / REALIZATION TECHNOLOGY:
As a design and printing collective, we also handled the printing. Nothing turns us on like joining old technologies with modern design, so we used our favorite technologies: letterpress, embossing, debossing, hot stamping, multilevel hot stamping, silkscreen, and pantone litho printing. Most of the prints and binding were done by hand. We also made custom die cut boxes with holes and holographic stickers.

SPECIFICATIONS / TECHNICAL PROPERTIES:
Calendar: 14.8 cm(w) x 21cm(h) x 0.8 cm(w) Stand: 14.8 cm(w) x 24 cm(h) x 9 cm(w)

TAGS:
Calendar, Conqueror, fine art printing, letterpress, hot stamping, silk screen, minimalism

RESEARCH ABSTRACT:
We did two kinds of research. The first involved exploring technological solutions for the form and function of the calendar. We wanted to find an innovative solution that suited the character of the design while remaining functional. The other bit of research involved the content of the design itself. We hunted for a wide range of associations tied to the shape and symbolism of the number eight. We were astonished by the vast array of topics we had to choose from.

CHALLENGE:
We decided to set a very high standard for the quality of the design and its execution. The most difficult part was matching the design to the paper and technologies so that everything was lucid, thought-provoking, and coherent. We took charge of everything, including the printing; at every step we modified our work and tended to every detail. On top of all this, we were dealing with difficult, manual printing techniques and a tight deadline, which made for no small challenge.
