DESIGN DETAILS
DESIGN NAME:
Dichroic

PRIMARY FUNCTION:
Side Table

INSPIRATION:
Says the designer, I find reflective materials create a kind of life or kinetic energy within an interior environment. making it less static or dull. The reflections in glass are like kinetic art installations that are never the same twice; as when you view them, what you are wearing, the time of day and type of light all factor into the reflection or look of the piece. As such, your experience with the piece of furniture is unique each time. I don’t like furniture to be static, but alive.
Finally, each piece in my furniture collection is either a solution to a found need, or a realization of an idea regarding how furniture can be set in a space like a work of art, yet serve a functional and comforting need.

UNIQUE PROPERTIES / PROJECT DESCRIPTION:
Dichroic uses one of the oldest materials in unexpected ways and to beautiful and dynamic effect. It features sheets of glass with micro-layers of metal oxide that refract light into multiple hues. It is extremely structural and minimal in profile. The frame of the table is stainless steel, but it also comes in bronze. The dichroic glass itself is composed of a laminate with a layer of clear and a layer of dichroic.

OPERATION / FLOW / INTERACTION:
It cannot be operated but is a reflective and absorptive surface that changes ongoing.

PROJECT DURATION AND LOCATION:
Dichroic was conceived of and designed from March through May of 2017 in Houston, Texas. The piece was first publicly displayed and exhibited during the NeoCon trade show in June 2017 in Chicago, Illinois.

PRODUCTION / REALIZATION TECHNOLOGY:
Glass to metal connections utilize newer technology that secure the hold better than before. The optic nature of the dichroic glass is a result of multiple ultra-thin layers of different metals (such as gold or silver); oxides of such metals as titanium, chromium, aluminum, zirconium, magnesium or silica which are vaporized by an electron beam in an advanced vacuum chamber. The vapor then condenses on the surface of the glass in the form of a crystal structure, which is as durable as the glass surface and fully integrated.

SPECIFICATIONS / TECHNICAL PROPERTIES:
33cm Width x 33cm Depth x 47cm Height

RESEARCH ABSTRACT:
The designer has worked for more than 20 years with dichroic glass. She loves the way it reflects and absorbs light and is so versatile and durable. The design started off as an exploration between space, light and function, but became much more. Through multiple iterations of design, manufacturers and durability testing, the piece is what it is today. Part dichroic and part stainless steel, it awes users and invites them to explore reality through its many reflections.

CHALLENGE:
The original intent with the piece was to add a level of luxury, function and lightness to the hospitality/corporate side table; but through experimentation, created a functional sculpture. The original design was based off of a glass structure with a metal base which evolved into a stainless steel L structure for durability reasons. Once this metal portion was designed, the designer wanted a glass laminate of some sort to contrast the polished finish of the stainless steel, something that would distort the world around it. Dichroic was a natural answer due to her experience with it in the architectural world and its whimsical nature.
