PRIMARY FUNCTION:
Smart Microgarden

INSPIRATION:
The current food system fails to produce nutritious food. Produce is picked prematurely and intended to ripen during transit rather than on the vine, reducing nutrient content and flavor. This supply chain is also inefficient with over 50% of produce lost from farm to table. SproutsIO shifts our dependence on industrial agriculture, repositioning people from the end of a flawed supply chain to the center of their own healthy food cycle.

UNIQUE PROPERTIES / PROJECT DESCRIPTION:
Grow indoors, year-round, soil-free with SproutsIO, the smart microgarden that learns from you. The SproutsIO system utilizes high performance technology and machine learning software to grow Personal Produce™, fruits and vegetables cultivated to your taste according to settings you customize. Fresh produce is now available any time, any place through an automated and transparent growing process which requires a fraction of the resources required by traditional growing.

OPERATION / FLOW / INTERACTION:
The SproutsIO experience begins by choosing a sIO seed subscription. When placed in the device, the sIO automatically activates the plant-specific Growing Profile. Our mobile app then provides system controls and performance data, transforming your phone into an all in one gardening tool. By transitioning from hydroponic to aeroponic environments and stimulating growth phases with specially-tuned lighting and irrigation, growth rates are two to three times faster than conventional growing. System-level learning optimizes performance over time, creating an increasingly efficient feedback cycle for all connected SproutsIOs.

PROJECT DURATION AND LOCATION:
SproutsIO Inc. was founded in 2013. We developed our first Complete Functional Prototype in 2014 and beta-tested with 50+ participants, using those learnings to create the Design for Manufacture (DFM) model in 2015. We continued to test the DFM model in 2016 and 2017 with award winning chefs through our Tastemaker Program. Mass production began in Q1 2018 as we prepare for a Summer 2018 launch to the public.

PRODUCTION / REALIZATION TECHNOLOGY:
SproutsIO was inspired by CEO Jennifer Broutin Farah’s urban agriculture research at the MIT Media Lab where she developed technologies related to growth media, sensors, automation, and networked infrastructure, all toward the goal of growing produce indoors. The proof of concept prototype for SproutsIO was the topic of her master's thesis. After years of development and testing with consumers as well as culinary professionals, we are preparing for a Summer 2018 launch.

CHALLENGE:
Through thoughtful design, we made gardening easy for anyone. Simply plug in the device, connect to the app, insert a sIO, and add water to get started. SproutsIO provides everything your plant needs - light, irrigation, and nutrients, tailored for each varietal. It requires water once a month and is dishwasher safe. SproutsIO will let you know when to harvest, auto-ordering your next sIO. Modular design makes expanding your garden easy - control multiple devices from the same mobile device.

PROFILE:
SproutsIO’s mission is to connect people to their food. By developing the world’s first-ever, revolutionary hybrid hydroculture technology, SproutsIO makes Personal Produce™ possible for everyone, everywhere with a fraction of the resources used by standard growing practices. The research behind SproutsIO began as co-founder and CEO Jennifer Broutin Farah’s thesis at the MIT Media Lab. After training as an architect, Jennifer focused on projects dealing with low-power energy harvesting, personal energy generation, and urban agriculture. In 2009 she created “Facade Farm” for the NYC Parks Department, a full-scale urban agriculture prototype designed to be integrated vertically in high-rise construction. During that process, she realized that while large-scale installations would provide food, they would not foster a relationship with food. This idea led her to the MIT Media Lab in 2011 where she introduced the study of urban agriculture and began to develop a personal-scale growing system. At the MIT Media Lab, Jennifer developed technologies related to growth media, sensors, automation, and networked infrastructure, all toward the goal of growing produce indoors. The proof of concept prototype for SproutsIO was the topic of her 2013 master's thesis. After being accepted into the PhD program at MIT, she decided to change course, leave academia, and launch SproutsIO Inc. alongside co-founder Kamal Farah.
