| DESIGN NAME: Diagonally Divided PRIMARY FUNCTION: Residential House INSPIRATION: In this case, we broke away from general way of vertical and horizontal thinking of layout plan and boldly used diagonal wall to separate the space, so the most vital area for daily life was enlarged. In addition, the fractional spaces formed from the position of diagonal wall were designed for storage which solved the problem for the lack of storage space at the same time. UNIQUE PROPERTIES / PROJECT DESCRIPTION: Since a tiny space often seems stiff and even narrower with the design of partitions, we chose a diagonal wall to link the functions of living room, dining room and bedroom together to eliminate the sense of stiffness and to allow people to comfortably live in the space. The surface of the wall is constructed of abundant variations of forms and structures by the usage of wood, stone and dark paint texture to extend the mobility visually, and thus forms a stylish metropolitan condo. OPERATION / FLOW / INTERACTION: Due to the fact that a unique diagonal wall is positioned in the sitting room, the mobility and spatial perception of the space are much different created from turning the axis of the original space. We hope to make the inhabitants to feel the fact that the living space was enlarged within the small house through exceptional design technique. PROJECT DURATION AND LOCATION: In this case, we spent a rather long time of more than 3 months on discussion and adjustment of the design plan. PRODUCTION / REALIZATION TECHNOLOGY: Considerable pollution would be created before and after interior renovation; accordingly, natural materials were selected to reduce the influence on the environment and inhabitants. In addition, we maintained the materials with their original texture and applied the materials with varying segmentation and splicing to present a cozy atmosphere of the space. SPECIFICATIONS / TECHNICAL PROPERTIES: The site of the case is located at the fourth floor of a ten-storied building and covers an area of 60 square meters. This building is located at a quiet residential area beside Xiangshan(Elephant Mountain) surrounded by woods and hiking trails, but it would quite humid in rainy season. As a result, ventilation and dehumidification system are both matters of concern in designing process. TAGS: Small Compact Living, Dividing the Layout Plan with Diagonal Axis, Small Space Enlarged, Natural Materials, Precise Allocation of Space RESEARCH ABSTRACT: We are often constrained by the conservative way of thinking developed from Oriental culture and education, so it is hard to think outside the box and propose distinctive solution. However, we brought up the idea of a diagonal line which is commonly considered hard to deal with in the layout plan with the hope to express the idea that perfect solution could be developed through extraordinary way of design thinking. CHALLENGE: In the developing process of this case, the most important and the hardest part is the the decision of the axis of diagonal wall. One degree more or one degree less would lead to the waste of interior space or inappropriateness of the proportion. We had to be cautious in estimating the most moderate space needed for each function of living, and decided the degrees of inclination according to the results of precise calculation.
