| DESIGN NAME: Wanda Jinan Basketball Ice Hockey Arena PRIMARY FUNCTION: Basketball and Ice Hockey INSPIRATION: The inspiration was drawn from nature, a jade lying in spring. Every spring and household willows of her kind remarks about the springs are the soul of Jinan. The skin of the arena was curved horizontal louvers, which was a response to the running springs. The shape and streamlined facade shows the energy of sports activities. The curved facade eliminate the spatial pressure of the architecture on surroundings and suit the atmosphere of springs city and culture. UNIQUE PROPERTIES / PROJECT DESCRIPTION: This architecture is intended to be one of the most important sports facilities in Jinan, also a landmark of the city. We attempted to make possible an architecture of modern creation and inspiration, and this does not mean we failed to consider a sense of local culture features. The arena could accommodate 10,000 audiences at most. After completion, it could serve the highest standards of basketball or ice hockey competitions. OPERATION / FLOW / INTERACTION: The overall planning of the site not only highlights the main body of facilities and fields of extreme sports, but also announces the multiplicity of the central park. During non-game period, the park is open to all citizens, thus providing a friendly local community. The idea of the planning is the combination of vitality and tranquility. The site has an axis cutting through the arena, separating the vitality area of civil plaza, training center, outdoor jogging track, extreme sports field and outdoor theater. PROJECT DURATION AND LOCATION: The project is located in Jinan, and the design was finished in 2018. The project is expected to be completed in 2019. PRODUCTION / REALIZATION TECHNOLOGY: In this design, the function and structure work cooperate well together and both reach into a new stage. The inside part uses reinforced concrete structure while the outside part chooses steel and large curtain wall. The main material of the facade consist of aluminium and glass. SPECIFICATIONS / TECHNICAL PROPERTIES: The arena covers a total area of 55,000 square meters, with four floors above the ground, which could accommodate 10,000 audiences, and also meet the requirements of Olympic games. The dome reaches 150 meters in length and 130 meters in width. The arena is a multifunctional sports center which mainly covers basketball and ice hockey games. When removing all temporary seats, the field area would be 44.4 meter by 77.2 meter. Therefore except basketball and ice hockey games, it can also hold badminton, volleyball, ping pang, hand ball and gymnastics when post game. TAGS: Basketball & Ice hockey Arena, Jinan, Modern, Traditional, Cultural RESEARCH ABSTRACT: The design of the architecture was first based on a previous academic work of collecting, analyzing, and comparing built Basketball and Ice Hockey Arena precedents worldwide, and then a deep and thorough study of requirements of all categories of relevant games. Besides being functional, we also considered local natural environment and cultural geography of the region, so we made use of elements of local culture and traditions in the creation of modern architecture. Furthermore, the design also took into account the sustainable tactics as a response to the idea of being environmentally friendly and energy saving. CHALLENGE: In order to reach the gradient skin, almost each panel of the louvers are different size and fixed in varied angle. What is more, it requires the transformation between ice hockey and basketball games, so the precision of the construction is highly demanded.
