| DESIGN NAME: Gleener On the Go PRIMARY FUNCTION: Travel Fuzz and Lint Remover INSPIRATION: Fuzz and lint plagues wardrobes not only at home but also when travelling. Responding to consumer demand, Gleener reimagined its award-winning Ultimate Fuzz Remover into a compact and travel-friendly design. Using the innovative features of its predecessor, we created a travel-friendly fuzz and lint remover that reduces waste and maintains fabrics while travelling. It is self-contained and opens like a glasses case to store the Edges, keeping all components clean and ready for use. UNIQUE PROPERTIES / PROJECT DESCRIPTION: Smaller than a glasses case, this patented travel fuzz remover is compact enough to take anywhere that last minute wardrobe touch-ups are needed. 3 unique fabric-safe Edges eliminate pilling while a built-in lint brush dusts away pet hair and dandruff. Battery-free and easily portable thanks to its compact design, this compact lint shaver revives clothing no matter where you travel. OPERATION / FLOW / INTERACTION: Completely manual, this fuzz and lint remover effectively removes fuzz and lint with gentle pressure. Brushing the product over fabric, the patented fabric-safe Edges 'combs' the pilling/fuzz from the surface of the fabric without damage. PROJECT DURATION AND LOCATION: The project was started and completed in Montreal between 2013 and 2015. It was officially launched in March 2015 at the International Home and Housewares show in Chicago, IL, USA. |
PRODUCTION / REALIZATION TECHNOLOGY: It was determined early in the design process that there are many different types of pilling and that abrasive materials (metal composites) were effective at removing it. Taking inspiration from razors with replaceable blades drove the basic aesthetic for the fabric-safe Edges. A docking station housing each Edge was incorporated inside the unit for all 3 Edges. Durable ABS plastic is the primary material and a lint brush was added to increase the functionality. SPECIFICATIONS / TECHNICAL PROPERTIES: 76mm x 152mm x 51mm (W x H x D) TAGS: fuzz remover, lint remover, fabric de-piller, battery-free, travel-sized, compact RESEARCH ABSTRACT: After the success of our flagship fuzz and lint remover, the Ultimate Fuzz Remover, there was a lot of customer feedback about how they would enjoy a travel-friendly option. Thus, this product had a customer-requested research methodology. We knew that we wanted all components to be stored together so as not to lose any parts and drew inspiration from items such as glasses cases and compacts. Using CAD drawings and the expertise of our product designer, the Gleener On the Go was crafted into a convenient and portable travel fuzz remover that fits nicely in hands of all sizes, as well as purses, suitcases and carry-on luggage. CHALLENGE: The most challenging design aspect was to create a true travel-sized product without compromising on functionality. It was crucial that all 3 fabric-safe Edges were able to store inside of the unit as well as accommodating a full-sized lint brush. We achieved all objectives.
