PRIMARY FUNCTION:
Rolling Pin

INSPIRATION:
The most traditional rolling pin relies on human's control of the thickness of dough, and it is more depend on the feeling and experience. Other new rolling pin, each size corresponds to a fitting, the installation and adjustment process is complex.We hope to design a convenient with more flexible adjustment rolling pin.

UNIQUE PROPERTIES / PROJECT DESCRIPTION:
O Rolling Pin can moderate thickness when rolling dough. When making pastry, as long as users slip the green silicone rubber band into slot of corresponded thickness, they can easily moderate dough's thickness without any complex.O Rolling Pin's surface is laser-engraved in dimensions, allowing users to easily observe the size of the wrappers to ensure that each has the same size.

OPERATION / FLOW / INTERACTION:
We redesigned the rolling pin with only two hard rubber bands, users can change the location of the rubber bands to adjust the thickness of the pastry, fewer accessories, more convenience. When the rubber band is in different grooves, the height from table is different, so that it is possible to easily obtain the pastry of different thickness.The groove can fix the rubber band stably, to ensure that it will not be moved aside when used.

PROJECT DURATION AND LOCATION:
The project started in Beijing 2017 in daodun Insight Design Studio and finished in May 20th 2017 in daodun Insight Design Studio.

PRODUCTION / REALIZATION TECHNOLOGY:
The main body of the product is made of hard bamboo,witch is more environmentally. Under one-time lathe processing, it feels closer to the traditional rolling pin. Numeral size logo is accomplished by laser engraving, so that the number is not easy to fade away. Part of the rubber band is hard natural rubber, and the deformation of the rubber material can ensure that the circle can be matched to different diameters of the groove, the rubber of 70 ° hardness can also reduce the deformation when rubber band receives the desktop extrusion in process of rolling.

RESEARCH ABSTRACT:
There are a relatively mass number of products with the same function on the market, which has complete operations. Therefore, the most difficult part of designing is how to minimax the sections, simplify the structure, facilitate the assembling. For achieving this aim, we tried various structure and methods. Although the design only has three choices of standard size now, it is a case with the most straightforward structure and most comfortable assembling.

CHALLENGE:
The key is how to quickly and easily adjust the size of the design, and we tried a lot of ways, Including trying use the principle of expansion screws can expand the size, but in the end we chose to use rubber deformation theory. We made a lot of sets of models to determine the size of the rubber ring and the depth of the groove at both ends of the rolling pin, so that the product can be well fixed in using, and also to ensure that the rubber ring can be easily removed.

Daodun Insight Design Studio, affiliated with Daodun International Educational Technology (Beijing) Co., Ltd., is a product design studio focused on simple, environmentally friendly people-oriented concepts. Whist designing products from the perspective of future consumers, it advocates rational consumption and also greatly satisfies the users psychologically. In 2014, Daodun proposed the concept of “Re-Design”, that is, “the defamiliarisation of known things”, which means optimise, enrich and redesign the original traditional products. In the process of “redesign”, it analyses the products’ “shortcomings” and “advantages” objectively and systematically, then returns to the origin, thus exploring the essence of design in the most approachable manner.
