| DESIGN NAME: C/C PRIMARY FUNCTION: Illuminated seat INSPIRATION: I was inspired to create a seat by using the properties of acrylic sheet to catch and reflect light at its edges but not the surface. This keeps the seat clear looking, while illuminating the edges when used with a programmable LED lighted from the base. UNIQUE PROPERTIES / PROJECT DESCRIPTION: A sculptural piece that functions as sitting area for the public and illuminates at night. When clear changes to colours, the seat switches from being dynamic shadow, into a colourful light show. The title, which consists of two “C” s facing each other, means from “clear to colors”, and to converse in colors. The seat shaped like the letter “C”, are meant to encourage the public to converse and connect people of diversity and culture. OPERATION / FLOW / INTERACTION: A program was written using Color Kinetics iColor Play 3 system to control 350 LED nodes housed in the base of the seat, rhythmically changing the seat to a dynamic light display. PROJECT DURATION AND LOCATION: It was commissioned for iLight Marina Bay 2010, and had been shown in several light festival around the world in Vivid Sydney 2011, Amsterdam Light Festival 2012, Jerusalem Festival of Light 2015, Norrkoping Light Festival 2015, Shenzhen in 2016, Horsens in 2017. PRODUCTION / REALIZATION TECHNOLOGY: Consisting of 80 pieces of 15mm thick acrylic sheet, C/Ɔ provide support and comfort when sat on. All edges are rounded to ensure safety and are be connected at three different points by stainless steel bolts and nuts to ensure stability. Using reflection from the acrylic sheets, 350 LED nodes are used to light up the edges of the sheets that will be contained at the base of the seat, programmed by Color Play 3 rhythmically for a radiant light show. SPECIFICATIONS / TECHNICAL PROPERTIES: L330 x W330 x H90 cm TAGS: Clear, Dynamic, shadow, acrylic sheet, illuminated, LED, seat, public RESEARCH ABSTRACT: My research for design was to create a sculptural work that encourages public interaction with the use of lighting technology. The study of function meeting aesthetics was important, so to design a modular system for easy assembly, yet structurally sound, creating ergonomic components was essential and very much considered early in the design process. CHALLENGE: One challenge was to connect the heavy acrylic sheets which is easy to assemble, yet strong enough to withstand the weight of audience sitting on it, without compromise on aesthetics. Another was to house all the LED nodes while aligning with each piece of acrylic sheet to optimize light intensity.
