DESIGN NAME:
Janus Fabric

PRIMARY FUNCTION:
Material

INSPIRATION:
Janus Fabric originated from the idea to expand the definition of a simple surface material to a performing component. To add a function to a product, additional components and complex production systems are usually required. This can cause economic and environmental damages and requires to alter the appearance of the product. Since in the case of Janus, the material itself can perform the function, this can help to solve these problems and allows to focus on the design.

UNIQUE PROPERTIES / PROJECT DESCRIPTION:
Janus Fabric is a new conceptual material, whose surface can work as a heating or lighting system. The combination of the material diversity and incorporated functional system creates multi-dimensional designs, which are both functional and aesthetic.

OPERATION / FLOW / INTERACTION:
Janus Fabric is made of one base material and multiple layers. People can design their own Janus Fabric by choosing the base material, the functional system, the surface patterns, the color and the finishing. The final material can perform heating and lighting, despite its thin thickness and light weight. Janus Fabric has the original characteristic of a base material, the effects that comes with using pigments and a high degree of freedom to express patterns on the surface. Janus Fabric expands the concept of a material by adding a function to it and therefore offering many possibilities to the designer.

PROJECT DURATION AND LOCATION:
The project is from 2013, and it won the Reddot Design award Best of the Best in 2013.

PRODUCTION / REALIZATION TECHNOLOGY:
Janus Fabric is a silkscreen printing technique using Polyurethane and chemicals, which are applied to various base materials. It is cheaper than mold casting productions. This is an advantage for the production of various kinds of small quantities. Janus Fabric can be made of a range of base materials such as textile, mesh, film, wood or metal. Many kind of pigments can be used with Janus Fabric. For example, using glass powder gives you a reflective effect, while when heating and lightening elements are used, the material can perform heating and lighting when electricity is applied. Furthermore, Polyurethane itself is slip-proof and Janus Fabric is VOC (Volatile Organic Compounds) free and strong at abrasion.

SPECIFICATIONS / TECHNICAL PROPERTIES:
Janus Fabric is provided as a customized piece. It can be offered as the shape of the surface of the final product to which Janus Fabric will be applied to. For pattern design, the thinnest possible thickness of Janus Fabric is 0.3mm.

RESEARCH ABSTRACT:
We interviewed designers in the automotive, electronics, furniture and fashion field, who gave us various views on materials. There are a typical things they consider when choosing a material for their products, such as the costs of production and the underlying production systems, but the most common and important answer was that the material should be received as comfortable by the customer. No matter how innovative the material is, people will not like it if the material does not appear pleasant to them. We did focus group research with designers to test many prototypes to improve Janus Fabric and to make it into life-friendly material.

CHALLENGE:
There were two main challenges. The first one was to come up with a system that allowed Janus to be applied to a real product and therefore to develop a working prototype using the right chemical mediums. It required countless tests. The second challenge was to make the designers understand the concept of Janus Fabric during our research. They had difficulties to understand the possibilities of Janus Fabric since it is categorized as a material and therefore people did not correlate it with an additional function. The strong preconception of the limitation of a material was an obstacle in proving the flexibility of Janus Fabric. Since Janus Fabric can be expanded in various ways by using new elements, we needed to show people many examples and explain about them.
