PRIMARY FUNCTION:
Virtual Reality Trailers

INSPIRATION:
Movie trailers are widely available on the Internet, but they are presented on a flat screen that is highly disassociated from the viewer. We believe that through Virtual Reality (VR) technology, we can place the viewers right into an environment that can be highly associated with the movie contents, and creates an unique immersive experience that lets the users to enjoy the movie trailer from a perspective within the movie.

UNIQUE PROPERTIES / PROJECT DESCRIPTION:
Virtual Reality (VR) technology is used to create an immersive experience that pulls the viewers into the movie trailers. A 3D environment is designed for each of the movies that blends into the movie trailers, and animations are also designed within the scene that synchronises with the contents being played in the movie trailers. This creates an immersive experience that was never seen before by the entertainment industry, and engages the viewers into the movies in a different level.

OPERATION / FLOW / INTERACTION:
Users can open the app and place their mobile devices into a Google Cardboard. They can then view within the Google Cardboard as if they have entered a cozy living room. Users can choose a movie trailer to watch from a huge screen, and will be transported into an environment that is highly associated with the selected movie contents. Animations and interactions around the virtual environment are synchronised with the movies.

PROJECT DURATION AND LOCATION:
The project started in October 2017 in Hong Kong and finished in November 2017 in Hong Kong, and was launched as a promotion campaign for Fox Networks Group to promote new Movies coming to Fox Movies channel. The campaign ran from November through to the end of December in 2017, and attracted a lot of engagements from the South East Asia region.

PRODUCTION / REALIZATION TECHNOLOGY:
Virtual Reality (VR) technology was used and adopted into mobile devices to maximise the reach of the audience. Complex 3D models and animations were created through 3D Max and Maya, and were put together into a game engine for programming the controls and interactions of the VR experience. The animated environments were rendered as 360 degree video so that calculations of the complex scene was not required in real time.

SPECIFICATIONS / TECHNICAL PROPERTIES:
2 modes were designed in the project where users can experience the VR immersion with or without the Google Cardboard. If users have a Google Cardboard, they can place their mobile devices into it and visual experience places them right into the designed environments. A full screen mode was implemented for users that do not have the Google Cardboard. Users can point the device into different directions to view different angles of the environment, giving them a unique experience in view the movie trailers.

RESEARCH ABSTRACT:
A basic study on immersive experience vs flat screen videos were conducted. A simple prototype was created, and a small group of 50 people aged between 25-45 were invited to join a focus. The results were astounding where 100% of all participants felt much more engaged with the movie trailers and 82% of the participants have requested to view the trailers again. We believe that VR could be a very useful tool for the entertainment industry to promote movies and attract strong engagements.

CHALLENGE:
We have decided to deploy the VR experience into mobile devices to maximise the potential audience. Mobile devices have limited processing power, and we didn't want to compromise on the experience quality due to hardware limitations. We creating complex 3D animated scenes and later rendered the animated environment in into a 360 degree video. This had led us to maintain the complexity and creativity of the contents, and the experience can run smoothly even on lower end devices.
