DESIGN DETAILS
DESIGN NAME:
agape

PRIMARY FUNCTION:
Multifunctional Tableware

INSPIRATION:
Agape came about after reflecting on the changes that the act of sharing a meal with our loved ones has experimented in the last decades. Sitting together around the table brings us together, making us feel part of the whole. Nowadays, though some of the objects and utensils we use are not in line with our present lifestyle. They are stuck in the past. After having sessions with different users, we worked on the evolution of the table setting objects to satisfy the contemporary needs.

UNIQUE PROPERTIES / PROJECT DESCRIPTION:
Agape reinterprets the classical tableware with pieces that adapt to small spaces and to the assorted food we serve nowadays. 2 main pieces, and 7 fit all in one: a pitcher, a circular tray, a handle/tray, a salad/soup serving bowl, 3 different size bowls, a platter and an oven tray. It is unique allowing for a variety of combinations. Multifunctional pieces that work well by themselves or in combination with others. Or, pieces that have different purposes depending on which side they are used.

OPERATION / FLOW / INTERACTION:
Each piece is ergonomically designed for bringing food to the table easily and serving it. The angular pieces connect to each other with ease for better stacking and carrying. The added value of the agape set is that each element is designed to fulfill several uses in an intuitive way: the big salad bowl turns into a hot soup serving bowl by incorporating the Saturn ring-shaped tray, trays that become handles or centerpieces, bowls that turn into pedestals. Many are the possibilities.

PROJECT DURATION AND LOCATION:
The project was developed from September 2017 through January 2018 in Madrid, Spain. After an intense design development (including participatory design activities, iterative prototyping, and testing with users), production is expected to start in April 2018. The project was exhibited in February 2018 at id.real studio, as part of the Madrid Design Festival OFF.

PRODUCTION / REALIZATION TECHNOLOGY:
Porcelain: Porcelain pieces will be produced with plaster molds, and introduced in the oven at 1020C during 18 hours. Afterwards, the pieces will be painted with enamel and baked again at 1240C during 20 hours. Wood: Oakwood hand-turned and varnished with food safe varnish. Marble: With CNC machine and water polished, for the shiny effect. Agape links tradition and modernity.

RESEARCH ABSTRACT:
The research was focused on learning about the habits of diners at the table. Through co-creation activities and tests with prototypes, several insights were identified. (1) Users look for multifunctional pieces that complement their basic set and that can be stored all in one. (2) People like to eat from bowls both at the table and around the house. (3) They prefer to buy pieces separately, depending on the uses that they have for them. (4) They seek to continuously surprise and be surprised.

CHALLENGE:
The main challenge of this project was to find a way to raise the food sharing experience with multifunctional and flexible objects that connect diners with their emotional memory. agape proposes a series of aesthetically pleasing pieces that complement every day and special occasions tableware. The other big challenge was to settle on the different uses each piece should accomplish to meet the diners needs and the diversity of foods on the market.
