DESIGN DETAILS
DESIGN NAME:
Caffe Medici

PRIMARY FUNCTION:
Coffee Shop

INSPIRATION:
Design inspiration was drawn from the artsy neighborhood landmarked by bungalow style houses and its eclectic culture. Our goal was to capture the true coziness of the bungalow without being literal in its approach.

UNIQUE PROPERTIES / PROJECT DESCRIPTION:
Every Caffe Medici should reflect the character of its neighborhood. The challenge here was to embody a sense of traditional South Austin charm within the context of a glossy new development. Creating a different experience, a sense of home and escape, informed the design concept: a deconstructed bungalow-style home, historically typical of the neighborhood. The design reinterprets the archetypes of the bungalow, assembling them in ways that abstract and energize. The space thus feels both familiar and intriguing. A scale-like facade, inspired by bungalow-style wood shingles, embraces the steel porch entry. Inside, small “coves” play on bungalow archetypes and cater to different experiences. The centrally-placed espresso bar is defined by a wavelike plaster ceiling, designed to pay homage to the hearth and chimney. Minimalist forms, earthy materials and modern bungalow archetypes creates a neighborhood oasis that feels as if it predates the larger commercial development surrounding it.

PROJECT DURATION AND LOCATION:
The project design duration was 14 weeks with construction around 16 weeks. The project is located in Austin, Texas.

FITS BEST INTO CATEGORY:
Architecture, Building and Structure Design

PRODUCTION / REALIZATION TECHNOLOGY:
The combination of digital fabrication and traditional methods made possible the double curvature Venetian plaster ceiling, and kept this project financially accessible. We reduced material waste by digitally mapping all the steel and wood cuts, thus achieving great precision in all details. We celebrated repurposed materials like wood decking on the shingle-inspired facade. The result is a striking look with a traditional feel; a collaboration between artisans and digital fabrication.
