| DESIGN NAME: Cocoon PRIMARY FUNCTION: Lounge Chair INSPIRATION: Cocoon Chair was inspired by the creation of cocoon. The element of line and frame have been used for bio-mimicry cocoon building technique. The woven line presents the texture of cocoon and the rocking motion is an experience of the floating nature of the cocoon. The outcome express the sense of comfort and relaxation. UNIQUE PROPERTIES / PROJECT DESCRIPTION: Cocoon Chair uses continuous line randomly looped around a frame structure to create a woven form that serves as a lounge chair. The result goes through long development process and understanding of the relationship between frame and line, material, shape incorporate with human's body, motion, and comfort. And minimal structure was considered based on the lightless feeling of the cocoon. The outcome is a minimal structure that represents a natural comfort form and it serves as a functional piece of furniture which called Cocoon. OPERATION / FLOW / INTERACTION: Cocoon chair is a rocking lounge chair inspired by silkworm's cocoon. A strong and flexible construction was developed imitating a silkworm’s cocoon. Its minimalistic structures were used to represent the lightless feeling of the cocoon. The rocking motion presents the floating nature of the cocoon in bringing out the sense of comfort. PRODUCTION / REALIZATION TECHNOLOGY: Material: Stainless steel and leather string SPECIFICATIONS / TECHNICAL PROPERTIES: Width 1000mm X Height 900mm X Length 2000mm TAGS: Cocoon, lounge chair, frame and line, rocking lounge chair, woven line RESEARCH ABSTRACT: Cocoon chair is developed through different processes, it is originally inspired by how silkworm develops cocoon, so the early research was focused on cocoon building technique. After that different mock ups were built to explore how to control line form in minimal structure. Then the development went down to study how line form incorporates with a human body. The leather string was chosen because of its strength, flexibility and it is closer to human's temperature so it can bring out maximum comfort. Finally, the rocking motion was applied to represent the experience of the floating nature of the cocoon. The design aims to bring out the sense of natural comfort, relaxation and bio-mimicry of the cocoon. CHALLENGE: The challenges were to control line form in minimal structure, balance of the shape with human body in related to the centre of gravity. NAME: Tim Ｋｗｏｋ PROFILE: Timmy Kwok is a product designer graduated from RMIT University. She is now working as a professional product designer in Hong Kong. She loves art and especially interested in how can art integrated with ergonomics. Besides, she is also nature lover, she believes nature is the source of design. Few years before she was inspired by how silkworm develop cocoon, this is how she starts the project “Cocoon”. |
