| DESIGN NAME: Mi-30 PRIMARY FUNCTION: Table Lamp INSPIRATION: The inspiration came from various textures, geometries and forms that exist in nature while the intention was to transform 2D planar geometry into 3-dimensional space/ enclosures that imply organic growth and would merge the distinction between silhouette and body. UNIQUE PROPERTIES / PROJECT DESCRIPTION: Designed as a decorative light, Mi-30 deals with the notion of transmutation and the translation of planes into form that hint at fluidity and movement. The layering system of the skin plays with a range of light and shadows, creating an enclosure that implies organic growth. OPERATION / FLOW / INTERACTION: The lamp can be viewed from 360 degrees and appears to have a different profile from each angle. The varying length and width of the fins result in the lamp providing varying intensities of light. This can allow the user to change the orientation of the lamp depending on the amount of light required. PROJECT DURATION AND LOCATION: The lamp has been designed and produced in Lahore, Pakistan. PRODUCTION / REALIZATION TECHNOLOGY: The design relied heavily on 3D CAD software including parametric design to develop not only the overall form but the vary sizes of 'fins' that form the layered skin of the lamp. The assembly of the lamp is a labor intensive process initially requiring assembly of the structural skeleton, followed by the skin consisting of 30 'fins' of varying profiles. SPECIFICATIONS / TECHNICAL PROPERTIES: 760 mm height (including steel tripod ) X 455 diameter. The structural frame of the shade is made from 5 mm and 3 mm clear acrylic and the fins are made of 3 mm translucent white acrylic. Tripod is white powder coated steel. TAGS: parametric design, acrylic lamp, decorative lamp, acrylic shade, raza zahid RESEARCH ABSTRACT: The research was focused on patterns that exist in nature and their translation into complex skins using parametric design. The product is the result of an intensive research into complex geometry as well as research into material attributes and construction/ production techniques. CHALLENGE: The biggest challenge was not so much the designing of the product but rather in the realization of that design. Owing to the limited resources available to product designers in the country, we had to develop joinery and production details that would be easy to manufacture and assemble. A number of prototypes were designed to fine tune various details of the lamp in order to ensure a structurally stable product and to develop the best joinery mechanisms.
