f.ly Table lamp by Andrea Macruz

DESIGN DETAILS
DESIGN NAME:
f.ly

PRIMARY FUNCTION:
Table lamp

INSPIRATION:
Leaf venations are not exactly symmetric. They frequently start aligned, along the principal segment, soon misalign, and then re-align. Besides, the sequence and size of the segments between the ramifications are not the same. Observing an Embaúba leaf, the following question popped up: how would it be possible to transform this ramification pattern into an origami, which is usually very symmetrical? How to make folding patterns similar to some in Nature? Like a leaf that withers...

UNIQUE PROPERTIES / PROJECT DESCRIPTION:
These pieces were design with withering in mind. They come flat, to facilitate their transport and storage, and when used they open.

OPERATION / FLOW / INTERACTION:
In order to use, just open the package and unfold the lamp.

PROJECT DURATION AND LOCATION:
The project started in April 2017 in Sao Paulo and finished in August 2017 in Sao Paulo, and was exhibited in MADE fair in August 2017.

FITS BEST INTO CATEGORY:
Lighting Products and Fixtures Design

PRODUCTION / REALIZATION TECHNOLOGY:
f.ly are made of a neutral ph paper, instead of an acid one, so they are more durable and won't yellow in time like rice paper does. The plaiting on the surface is made in natural vegetable pigments like Annato, Saffron, Indigo, etc and a LED light.

SPECIFICATIONS / TECHNICAL PROPERTIES:
Open: +- 480mm Width x 250 mm Depth x 200 mm Height Close: +- Diameter: 270mm x 50mm Height

RESEARCH ABSTRACT:
a lot of research was done with natural pigments and bioglitter to see which would represent better leaf coloration in order to show that the color of some leafs is not uniform. It is usually either darker near the main ramification and lighter on its edges or the opposite.

CHALLENGE:
The challenge was to propose an asymmetrical origami which would fold/unfold in an elegant way.
