| DESIGN NAME: Rabelo PRIMARY FUNCTION: Lounge chair INSPIRATION: Rabelo is a lounge chair that aims to break with the traditional language of the standard chairs. Its structure comes from an organic inspiration and its sculpted feet are laced to a column that holds and follows the ergonomic movement throughout its extension and stands at the air as you can see from the side. In my opinion Rabelo is a smooth continuity of the art nouveau style. Rabelo is a lounge Chair that tries to break the traditional image of the typical chair. I'm inspired by the past, more precisely by the Belle Epoque period, where the current style was Art Nouveau. Thats how the idea of bending the wood just like nature was born. In its feet grounded to the floor like roots, borns a stem that curves and carries a leaf shaped ergonomically just like a seat. UNIQUE PROPERTIES / PROJECT DESCRIPTION: The structure of lounge chair is formed by pieces of solid wood glued and reinforced that are later worked and carved in a single piece. The seat is a unique piece of solid wood shaped to fit perfectly in the column. OPERATION / FLOW / INTERACTION: The concept was deliberately to unbalanced the structure and concentrate the tension in just one axis that goes from the ground to the top arousing immediately curiosity among the observers and at the same time create a sculpture with an aesthetic and decorative effect. PROJECT DURATION AND LOCATION: The project started in Lisbon in April of 2016 since with a small model and finished with a full-scale prototype in July of 2017 FITS BEST INTO CATEGORY: Furniture Design |
PRODUCTION / REALIZATION TECHNOLOGY: solid wood and some internal metal parts to fortify the structure SPECIFICATIONS / TECHNICAL PROPERTIES: Width 495 mm x depth 690 mm x Height 940 mm TAGS: Chair, armchair, furniture, manual, hand-made, design, handcraft, Paul Fitas, seating, ergonomic, organic, art nouveau, solid wood RESEARCH ABSTRACT: The admiration I have for the art nouveau, the architect Gaudi and organic shapes challenged me to draw something different. After many drawings, models and scale 1/50 I went to a Portuguese craftsmen to produce the real model. These Portuguese craftsmen were kind enough to pass me the wood knowledge of many generations of artisans. CHALLENGE: The durable and safe structure of this elegant lounge chair is guaranteed by internal reinforcement and gluing with fittings made by specialists with many years of experience.
