DESIGN NAME: Mukava Executive Desk
PRIMARY FUNCTION: Home Office Desk
INSPIRATION: My inspiration was to sustainably design a traditional executive desk with an elegant modern look, that used no metal fasteners and the ability to move through small doors and spaces without the need for equipment. I also required plenty of usable storage for all my various tools and paperwork. Using these principles I was able to design a simple but unique system for assembly. The desk can fit through 18" wide spaces, and can be disassembled, moved and re-assembled within seconds.
UNIQUE PROPERTIES / PROJECT DESCRIPTION: One of the great features of this desk is how it assembles. There are no metal fasteners holding it together, but its own weight and is extremely easy to move. The writing surface uses a slat bracing system to connect with the pedestals.
OPERATION / FLOW / INTERACTION: The detachable writing surface allows two people to move the desk through tight spaces, it would not fit through fully assembled.
PROJECT DURATION AND LOCATION: The Mukava Executive Desk is design/built in Baton Rouge, Louisiana. I started designing in early 2016 and finished building the final production ready model in September 2016. The design went through several iterations until i was satisfied with the results.

PRODUCTION / REALIZATION TECHNOLOGY: Construction techniques are traditional handmade mortise & tenon joinery using solid walnut for the body and curly maple for drawer boxes. Although it weighs roughly 300 lbs, all lumber is hand selected to minimize waste during construction. Each drawer box utilizes dovetail joinery for an elegant look. Finishing is done with sustainable water based finish techniques, giving each desk an heirloom quality.

RESEARCH ABSTRACT: I went through many revisions to reach the final design. Since I was designing a replacement desk for my office and personal use, I spent many hours finding the perfect proportions to maximize drawer space and incorporate good design principles to create something not only with beautiful form, but excellent function.
CHALLENGE: The challenge was to elegantly mix modern and traditional executive desk design, that blends well in older and newer residential/commercial environments. One complex part was hand planing the angles into the drawer faces, cutting the pedestals sharp off angle miters, and having every element line up perfectly upon assembly. Getting the front and back planed sweeps to match exactly was a challenge. Using solid wood for the long surface required excellent grain matching, to minimize flexing over many years. Each element required attention to detail, and no compromises.
