DESIGN DETAILS
DESIGN NAME:
Komodo

PRIMARY FUNCTION:
Bedside organiser

INSPIRATION:
Komodo was intended to be a simple and effective solution to a traditional bedside table. The intention was to come up with a whole new take on the traditional square, four-legged option without sacrificing any functionality.

UNIQUE PROPERTIES / PROJECT DESCRIPTION:
Being wall mounted, Komodo was able to maintain a minimal style. It was designed to accommodate the overnight essentials that we take to bed with us. A glass of water, a phone and a lamp can all easily fit on the upper surface while magazines, books or tablets can be slotted into the shelf below. The opening to the shelf was placed on the side as this allows easier access from a reclined position. Komodo bedside organisers are produced in pairs in the mirror image of each other.

OPERATION / FLOW / INTERACTION:
The simplicity of komodo is its main advantage. There is no unnecessary clutter, no legs, drawers or moving parts. It is easily mounted requiring only two screws and its modern sleek design makes it complimentary addition to a modern minimal bedroom.

PROJECT DURATION AND LOCATION:
The project was conceived and realised in Paraty, Brazil 2017.

FITS BEST INTO CATEGORY:
Furniture Design

PRODUCTION / REALIZATION TECHNOLOGY:
Komodo was handmade from solid hard woods (freijó with details in muirapiranga) using traditional woodworking methods. Hand cut dovetails were used to join the three main pieces, angled splines were then inserted to lock the two surfaces together while also creating an interesting detail. Special care was taken to account for wood movement due to temperature and humidity fluctuations.

RESEARCH ABSTRACT:
The intention with komodo was to reduce a bedside table back to its bare bones while maintaining the functionality required for such an item. In order to do this inspiration was taken from modern architectural designs where separate rooms or areas are disregarded in favour of light open spaces where very little is hidden or disguised. The use of drawers, compartments or a complicated structure was therefore to be avoided.

CHALLENGE:
The main obstacle encountered was during the construction phase in order to avoid and adverse effects of wood movement. The grain was orientated in such a way that any expansion or contraction would occur along its width and therefore not jeopardize any of its joints or angles. The use of dovetail joints while being very strong also worked to impede any bending or cupping of the flat surfaces. The other challenge faced was to find an effective way of securing the piece to the wall that would not cause any lateral strain in the event of expansion/contraction. For this keyhole slots were employed which have the added benefit of being invisible once mounted.
