DESIGN DETAILS
DESIGN NAME:
Pendú

PRIMARY FUNCTION:
Organiser shelf

INSPIRATION:
The idea for Pendú came around as an organisational solution. It combines the flat surface of a table with wall mounted hooks and a mirror while occupying a fraction of the space those three items would take up individually without sacrificing functionality.

UNIQUE PROPERTIES / PROJECT DESCRIPTION:
Pendú was conceived as a 'welcome home' shelf, a simple piece that simplifies your life. Designed to be placed by the front door where you can free yourself of all the various objects we carry around. Underneath it possess two magnets for attaching keys and three hooks for bags or necklaces. The flat shelf surface can accommodate phones and wallets and has two overlapping depressions for coins or other small loose items. It also includes a mirror for any final checks when heading out of the door

OPERATION / FLOW / INTERACTION:
Being an item that gets used frequently Pendú needs to be simple and easy to use. It will generally be the first or last piece of furniture with which the user will interact upon arriving at or leaving the house.

PROJECT DURATION AND LOCATION:
The project was conceived and realised in Paraty, Brazil 2016.

FITS BEST INTO CATEGORY:
Furniture Design

PRODUCTION / REALIZATION TECHNOLOGY:
Pendú was hand made using solid hard woods (reclaimed ipê and garapeira). The hooks are made from discarded off cuts; their 'dovetail' shape allows them to be slid into the main body without any need for screws. It is mounted on the wall via two keyhole slots enabling it to be attached/removed easily while completely concealing the mountings.

RESEARCH ABSTRACT:
The brief for Pendú was to combine a number of items into one simple elegant piece. In many households the amount of furniture placed by the front entrance is often unnecessary, in many cases consisting of a table, coat hooks and a wall mounted mirror. Often the table provides more space than required for everyday items such as wallets, keys and loose change. The result can either be unused space or the accumulation of clutter. Likewise coat hooks often end up being used not just to hang up everyday coats and jackets but to store unused ones. While providing adequate space to store frequently used everyday items, there is no 'extra' storage where items can accumulate, in this way it is not only suited to households with limited space but its efficiency makes it suitable to any environment.

CHALLENGE:
The main challenge when designing Pendú was how to keep it small in size but able to hold a number of items. This was achieved by incorporating the hooks and magnets underneath and the depressions on the top surface. The result is that numerous everyday items can be stored on it, each in its own place without interfering with one another.
