| DESIGN NAME: Shelf Lamp PRIMARY FUNCTION: Lamp INSPIRATION: Shelf is inspired by the scalability and detachability of camera tripod as well as easel. Create the lamps by using the propertied of camera tripod and easel could augment the flexibility of using the product. From performance level, the great equilibrant of these two projects were helpful to construct the Shelf. UNIQUE PROPERTIES / PROJECT DESCRIPTION: Shelf is a series of lamps made from beech, based on the research of the states quo of young people resides in rental housing estate with low budget could generally afford a crowded room with a celling light and a table lamp. Out of regard for improve reading environment and lower the cost, a variety of lamps has been designed. In order to easy storage along with easy transport, the propertied of camera tripod and easel can solve technical difficulties. The legs of lamp can be folded, disassembled and easy to assemble, user can easily adjust on the height of the lamp according to different practical usage. OPERATION / FLOW / INTERACTION: Shelf is a series of lamp combine with variety function of the lamps in your home, play different roles such as floor lamp, table lamp and bedside lamp. The main structure of the lamp could easily get folded, assembled and disassembled, could be adjusted at different angles and heights according to multiple use condition and the height of different users. For those who have crowded residence, Shelf is multipurpose lamp which is easy to storage. For those who moves a lot, Shelf is easy to transport. For those who care both the functional value and aesthetics, Shelf are useful lamps and also decoration. PRODUCTION / REALIZATION TECHNOLOGY: To realize the value for easy storage and easy transport, the scalability and detachability of camera tripod and easel is worth studying, after some research, cuboid as the form of main structure is better than the columniform in order to easy storage and transport. The angle formed by the line of lamp could also play a role of decoration. For the materials part the main structure of lamp is beech, a commonly used material for Chinese furniture production, it is substantial, durable, punching pressure is strong, relatively light, and inexpensive. The light part is Led strip, effective also low cost. SPECIFICATIONS / TECHNICAL PROPERTIES: Shelf Lamp 1, h1890mm(max). Shelf Lamp 2, h1350mm(max). Shelf Lamp 3, h750mm(max). Leg, 4.5mm x 4.5mm x 760mm, 4.5mm x 4.5mm x 660mm. Lamp, 4.5mm x 4.5mm x 800mm TAGS: Demand, Desire, New Value, Multifunction, User-Centered Design, Design for assembly and disassembly, Adjustable, Assemblable, Balanced, Detachable, Scalable RESEARCH ABSTRACT: Main brief is four words, demand, behavior, desire and new value. During the extensive research I have read The Design of Everyday Things from Donald A. Norman. And learned a new methodology of User-Centered Design. Realize product is not born for production but for requirement. After getting insight from college students live in rental crowded space and poor dim light and some interviews to get deeper understanding of requirement, combined most of theirs desires, the function of lamp is quite clear, and for those students of design and art, aesthetics is as important as function. CHALLENGE: The challenge actually happened from the very beginning of ideation, how can I make them doing good job at the level of functional requirements also keep good balance without general technology of lamp. I found camera tripod and easel are really good inspiration to build my project. Since the first prototype have done, it is easily loose balance with small rubber mat, for the real product I change it into cylinder-shaped rubber to keep the lamp balance.
