| DESIGN NAME: Devoted PRIMARY FUNCTION: Breast pump INSPIRATION: Many of working mothers are forced to stop breastfeeding despite its benefit to both the baby and mother. Breastfeeding is widely known to provide irreplaceable benefit such as the most natural way to strengthen baby immunity through transmitting antibiotic, and reinforces mothers’ recovery after delivery, enhancing the intimacy between baby and mother. UNIQUE PROPERTIES / PROJECT DESCRIPTION: DEVOTED is a breast-pumping set. It designed to foster a private, comfortable, smart and convenient experience that allows its users to pump milk without having to retreat to the unpleasant, unhygienic environment of a toilet. It includes a cloak and pumping components.The cloak covers the upper body to maintain the personal privacy when pumping milk. Then, breast-milk will be transferred through a tube and stored to the container in the hidden pocket. At the same time, the heating pad in breast shield provides warm feeling to mother breasts which can be more comfortable. OPERATION / FLOW / INTERACTION: 1.Put on the cloak and press the button to activate the heating shield 2.Tuck the shield under your bra. Then, pass the tube through the hidden pocket. 3.Connect the tube with the device in the pocket to activate. Then starting to pump, the user can continue to work while pumping. After pumping, user can unlock the device and remove the container and store the container in the refrigerator. PROJECT DURATION AND LOCATION: The project started the research in September 2015 in Hong Kong. The design stage started in January 2016 and finished in June 2016. Also the project was exhibited in Dubai Design week - globe grad show in October 2016 and Salone del Mobile - Salone Satellite 2017. |
PRODUCTION / REALIZATION TECHNOLOGY: The pumping shield : PP plastic. The container and transfer tube: silicone. The main machine is including LCD screen, motor and battery. Cloak: woven fabric. SPECIFICATIONS / TECHNICAL PROPERTIES: not bigger than W 350mm x L250mm x H80mm TAGS: private, smart, humane, hygienic RESEARCH ABSTRACT: The research is based on the cosmopolitan cities like Hong Kong. In the recent year, the awareness of breastfeeding is increasingly high.Many of survey indicated that working mother are forced to stop breastfeeding despite its benefit to both the baby and mother. The main reason for mothers to stop breastfeeding after delivery is returning to workplace. Due to unfavorable conditions in workplace, working mother have to encounter difficulties like lack of privacy, unwanted attention from others and stress from using time-consuming and uncomfortable pumping milk products. Since workplace is lack of nursery room and existing product in the market does not completed. Mother have no choice but to pump milk in the toilet. CHALLENGE: The hardest part of the project is organising and simplify the scenario. Especially this is a set which including different parts. I believed that many inspiration are from making, doing and trying. So I spent most of time on development and testing. NAME: Wong, Sin Bing Celian PROFILE: WONG Sin Bing Celian, a product designer from Hong Kong. She graduated from The Hong Kong Polytechnic University with product design major. She has 2 years soild experience design which are including kitchenwares, housewares, watch design and graphic design. Bing believes that many inspirations are from the observation and questioning in our daily life. With interest in functional design, she hopes to design more products to enhance people’s quality of life. |
