The Work Project Coworking Space by Lorène Faure and Kenny Kinugasa-Tsui

DESIGN DETAILS
DESIGN NAME:
The Work Project

PRIMARY FUNCTION:
Coworking Space

INSPIRATION:
With the high ceiling heights, Bean Buro created a dramatic welcoming space with feature meeting rooms that are elevated, each crafted with curved timber canopies that are lined with acoustic fabric soffits. The design concept for these sculptural meeting rooms was driven by the poetic interpretations of the history of the waterfront district, and the dynamic atmosphere of the fishing community whom once gathered under boating canopies.

UNIQUE PROPERTIES / PROJECT DESCRIPTION:
Pushing the wel-being factor to the limit, Bean Buro has collaborated with the renowned French botanist Patrick Blanc, who pioneered the original hydroponic vertical garden, to create a plant filled environment for the coworking space. This is an unprecedented case of workplace design where hospitality and wellbeing values are placed at the highest standards.

OPERATION / FLOW / INTERACTION:
The workspaces are crafted to be the most complete environment for the contemporary workforce. Both the serviced offices and coworking spaces are created to deliver hospitality values and standards. Just like how the hotel sector is known for creating memorable guest experiences and comfortable stays, this project too has adopted a similar mindset, ensuring members feel that coming to work is a true pleasure.

PROJECT DURATION AND LOCATION:
The project started in February 2016 in Hong Kong and finished in September 2016.

FITS BEST INTO CATEGORY:
Interior Space and Exhibition Design

PRODUCTION / REALIZATION TECHNOLOGY:
The Stage is designed to hold up to 110 guests, it is an impressive setting for showcases, media events, awards ceremonies, product launches, celebrations, social and business receptions. The Gallery is designed to accommodate up to 45 guests at a time, the Gallery is an ideal space suitable for product launches, trunk shows and pop up sales. The Garden is designed to hold up to 60 guests, The Garden derives its name from the vertical garden designed by Patrick Blanc and ideal for tastings, showcases and media round table events.

SPECIFICATIONS / TECHNICAL PROPERTIES:
The materials finishes are coherent throughout, but subtly evolve through the different spaces. For example, timber is used as a coherent architectural finish, while pastel wall paints inject moments of calm or dynamic paint patterns to boost energy. Cork walls are provided for personalised pin ups and to create acoustic and visual warmth. The shared spaces are designed to increase chance encounters, such as the lounges, work bars, and signature Bean Tables, which are sharing tables with playful curved edges that allow members to work individually while simultaneously encouraged to interact with each other.

RESEARCH ABSTRACT:
The design creates a multisensory environment to enhance productivity. Every single element including music, scent, refreshment, technology, furniture, meeting facility and amenity has been carefully curated with the goal of improving productivity and work experience. Members are empowered with access to a range of facilities, services and thoughtfully curated amenities that will help accelerate their rise. The workspaces cater to teams of any size, are fully fitted and are accessible twenty four hours a day.

CHALLENGE:
The workspaces are crafted to be the most complete environment for the contemporary workforce. Both the serviced offices and coworking spaces are created to deliver hospitality values and standards. Just like how the hotel sector is known for creating memorable guest experiences and comfortable stays, this project too has adopted a similar mindset, ensuring members feel that coming to work is a true pleasure. This is an unprecedented case of workplace design where hospitality and wellbeing values are placed at the highest standards.

CLIENT/STUDIO/BRAND DETAILS
NAME:
Bean Buro

PROFILE:
The studio is an emerging architecture and interiors practice from London and Paris, led by Lorène Faure and Kenny Kinugasa-Tsui, with a team of international designers to provide architecture, interior, installation, furniture, product and masterplanning design services. The Hong Kong studio was opened in 2013. The diversity of the practice with its collaborators reinforces a core vision for the practice: to respond to the exchanges of global cultural narratives, incorporating overlapping design disciplines specializing in the social, economical and political production of urban spaces. We believe architecture is an emotional, spatial experience produced by both the user and the author. Our design methodologies stem from the observation, speculation and analysis of contextual narratives. These narratives, or ‘stories’, generate dynamic exchanges of historical, environmental, cultural and social factors, resulting in highly inventive interventions while preserving plenty of intellectual wit. COLLABean, as an integrated part of Bean Buro, is a trans-disciplinary platform for collaborations between practice, research and academia. COLLABean can provide design research services for business organisations, and wherever appropriate, to involve specialists’ input from a network of highly reputable designers, academicians and researchers in the design field. The practice has since produced a string of successful interior architecture projects for luxury residential clients as well as workplace designs for reputable companies such as Cheil, Leo Burnett, Warner Music, and has been awarded Silver Winner in the Asia Pacific Interior Design Award 2015, Runner Up in Architizer A+ Awards 2015, Gold, Silver & Bronze Winner in the A’ Design Awards, and Finalist Winner of the 13th Modern Decoration International Media Award. The studio has a rigorous methodology of exploring spatial narratives through conceptual drawings and models that explore the humanistic aspects of design, and has been featured on Archdaily, Elle Decor and Wallpaper* Magazine.
