| DESIGN NAME: Zodyak PRIMARY FUNCTION: Calendar INSPIRATION: Everything happens for a reason on Earth. The Earth creates the days by orbiting around its own axis, the Moon creates the months by orbiting around the Earth. The Earth’s orbital move provide an inspiration to the design of the product. It consist of two rings. The outer ring has the months on it, therefore symbolizes the rotation of the Moon around the world to generate the months. The inner rings can orbit around itself, therefore it symbolizes rotation of the Earth around its own axis. UNIQUE PROPERTIES / PROJECT DESCRIPTION: Zodyak is a three dimensional desk calendar which can be used every year. The product which can tell the date three dimensionally with a plain and simple design language is used manually. Two circular parts are interlocked and the days can be arranged through the gap on the outer part. The product gets ready to use by placing those rings designed to be interlocked onto a stand. When the parts are interlocked, it occupies less place so that you can keep it in a small package while not using it. OPERATION / FLOW / INTERACTION: The rings which are interlocked are placed onto the stand, by adjusting the date. The gaps on the stand are suitable for the rings to sit perfectly. In addition, thanks to the ‘+’ shaped bulge supporting the rings, the gaps are truly placed. The dates can be changed singlehandedly. Because of the fact that it is provided for using on the table, the stand is designed angled to be seen easily. PROJECT DURATION AND LOCATION: The product is designed in Turkey in 2016. Registration process of the design has been going on. Prototypes were produced in Konya, in December, 2016. |
PRODUCTION / REALIZATION TECHNOLOGY: Each part of the product can be produced using the same material. It is recommended to use PLA and ABS plastics during production. For single production three dimensional prototype production methods can be used whereas for mass-production plastic injection moulding is preferred. SPECIFICATIONS / TECHNICAL PROPERTIES: The product is packed up into a box by interlocking the parts. A box measures 110 x 110 x 32 mm is suitable for the Zodyak. When it is ready to use it measures 106 x 106 x 116 mm. When the client get it out of the box, he can set the Zodyak up by himself, there is no need to montage. It doesn’t have complicated mechanism. Within this scope orbital motions of the Earth, the Moon and the Sun are examined. Following the searches, it is thought that handling the action of showing date metaphorically can make the meaning. Due to failure and incorrection possibilities of mechanic calendars, manual calendars are thought to be more useful. Besides, usage of manual calendars brings forth a pleasant action. CHALLENGE: Fundamental problem definition of the design are; spectacular, minimal approach and transportation advantages. Comprising of few parts and being manual makes the Zodyak preferable. It is a spectacular and practicable desktop accessory having a basic, plain and elegant look. Its interlocked form provides a design advantage, so it occupies less place when it is out of use.
