| DESIGN NAME: Hayat Agacı - Life Tree PRIMARY FUNCTION: Sculpture Lighting INSPIRATION: "Life Tree" is commisoned for the entrance of Raffles Arcade in Zorlu Center. The designers were inspired to design an art piece that will blend into the already complete and highly engineered form of the building and also provide roots and spirit to it so the idea of the art piece surfaced naturally. "Life Tree";which is a highly engineered scrupture; was created just like the building it's embedded into, but also has a strong reference to being rooted in nature. UNIQUE PROPERTIES / PROJECT DESCRIPTION: "Life Tree" is based on a longstanding mthological perception that symbolizes the spirit adapting to the earthly affairs without breaking the bonds with its soul and essence.It gives hope by suggesting the strenght of the tree, the nature, promosing exuberant days ahead.The biggest challange of this product is;changing the structure of a regular tree into a lighting structure by a huge hand-made commisioned product. It's charming body and shining branches like diamonds makes the product unique. OPERATION / FLOW / INTERACTION: The design reflects mythological perception which sembolizes the spirit adapting to the earthly affairs without breaking the bond with the soul. PROJECT DURATION AND LOCATION: Life Tree is completed in 6 months and placed in Raffles Arcade Zorlu Center in September 2016. |
PRODUCTION / REALIZATION TECHNOLOGY: After setting the main philosophy designers started sketching on paper. Afterwars an identical copy of the Raffles enterance was built in Ozan Unal's atelier. The original version of the tree with clay and plaster. 3 bodies have been shaped by bronze founding in an atelier. The lightings have been prepared by glass blowing masters. Bronze branches have been prepared on-by-one using wax technique. SPECIFICATIONS / TECHNICAL PROPERTIES: The tree has approximately 150 branches which mean 150 glass blowing pieces. The whole tree is made of bronze. There are 2 trees, each made up of 2 tones of bronze. Each branch carries 600 mt of cable for lighting. After the finishing process, it has been transferred with a derrick car and dollies. Life Tree 4,5 meters tall and weighs 2 tons. TAGS: structure, lighting, design, istanbul, zorlu center RESEARCH ABSTRACT: Zorlu Center requested for a design to spirit up the Raffless entrance. It is always hard to not-interfere with the architectural structure in places that have already been completed. Thus, the designers thought they can design an art piece that will not interfere with the architectural structure and will also deliver a message. At that point Ozan Ünal; the sculptor; wanted to point out the beauty of nature in a concrete jungle while both delivering a startling message and also soothing at the same time. A sculpture of 4,5 meter and 2 tones was designed and it is the first design of the designers in that sense. CHALLENGE: This has been a fresh and exciting project. The designers need to stick to certain rules when designing a place or a product. The designers had to contribute to a design that has only a startling message to deliver.
