DESIGN DETAILS
DESIGN NAME:
Nissan×Teppei Hayakawa

PRIMARY FUNCTION:
2016 Calendar

INSPIRATION:
・What chemical change would be brought about when a car, 3-dimentional object and 2-dimentional artwork (paper cutout) are combined? Seeking this new potential of expression which has never been done before was our original idea. ・“Paper cutout” for each month was handmade inspired by vehicle used for each month. And 3-dimentinal design was developed by importing the cutout to the computer to create a 3-deimentional perspective showing the coexistence.

UNIQUE PROPERTIES / PROJECT DESCRIPTION:
・A collaboration work with an up-and-coming artist is used for the Nissan calendar every year and a papercut artist “Teppei Hayakawa” was appointed for the 2016 calendar. ・Paper is used to create two-dimensional papercuts. By contrast, a car is a three-dimensional objet. Merging two-dimensional and three-dimensional objects with creation of existing visual aspect was a creative challenge. ・The 2016 Nissan calendar provided a spatial aspect capturing mysterious time, as if we were seeing a fairy tale, with the elaborate and gentle papercut artwork acting in concert with the vehicles characteristics.

OPERATION / FLOW / INTERACTION:
・In general, the calendars are used as greeting gifts when visiting the clients at the end of the year. This is also the case at NISSAN. In addition, these calendars are delivered by the salesmen to NISSAN car owners. NISSAN considers the calendar to be a powerful branding item as it becomes a communication tool that their customers will look at practically 365 days a year.

PROJECT DURATION AND LOCATION:
・The calendar is to be delivered to salesmen at NISSAN dealers, and then distributed by them to customers.

FITS BEST INTO CATEGORY:
Graphics, Illustration and Visual Communication Design

PRODUCTION / REALIZATION TECHNOLOGY:
・“Paper cutout” for each month is handmade inspired by vehicle used for each month. ・3-dimentional data of the cutout is developed and placed in 3D space on the computer together with a vehicle image created by using 3DCG, and the background data is combined as well. ・Intriguing perspective is created just like seeing a fairy story with two elements; exquisite paper cutout and vehicle’s characteristic, are responding each other. ・3DCG-created vehicle image is perfectly reproduced the physical car’s beauty and high-quality feeling by using background reflections and glare effectively.

SPECIFICATIONS / TECHNICAL PROPERTIES:
・When opening the calendar, a “car and paper cutout” visual is placed at the top and the calendar is placed at the bottom. Calendar dimensions: Width 345mm x Height 480mm. It starts from December of the previous year and ends in December of the current year, the total of 14 visuals. ・This brochure uses “FSC (Forest Stewardship Council) approved paper”, which is made from thinned wood.

CHALLENGE:
・Paper cutout is a plain expression while vehicle is a 3-dimensional object. Blending 2-dimensional and 3-dimensional objects into one and creating an existing perspective for viewers were creative challenges. ・“Paper cutout” for each month is handmade inspired by vehicle used for each month. And 3-dimensional design was developed by importing the paper cutout to the computer. Computer-generated 3D illustration interweaved with paper cutout and vehicle. ・2016 Nissan calendar has intriguing perspective just like seeing a fairytale with artwork of exquisite paper cutout and vehicles characteristics responding to each other.
