| DESIGN NAME: BenjiLock PRIMARY FUNCTION: Fingerprint Padlock INSPIRATION: BenjiLock's concept begun with a typical day at the gym. I wanted to store my belongings, including my keys safely. I have never been great at memorizing numbers, so combination locks were not an option. That is when I went shopping for a biometric padlock, but I couldn't find one at a retail store. While searching, BenjiLock was born. We are living in an instant gratification world and need everything now, easy and convenient; BenjiLock is all of that and more. UNIQUE PROPERTIES / PROJECT DESCRIPTION: Whether you're on the go, heading to work, school or for a quick workout at the gym, storing your personal belongings has never been easier or safer. Introducing BenjiLock, the world's first traditional rechargeable padlock with fingerprint technology, which means this padlock can be open using your fingerprint, but also with a normal set of traditional keys, so if the technology fails, you're still able to use your lock. OPERATION / FLOW / INTERACTION: It is unique because it is so simple that no one came with the concept, until I had my own personal struggles in life and within that landscape, the idea was born. The project stands out because people are relating to it. They can see it being used right now. It was made specifically for the consumer in mind. First, you insert the key. Second, open lock and leave open. Third, press the power button. Fourth, hold finger on sensor, it will slowly flash green then red three times, when the light flashes green quickly fingerprint is stored and then you remove your finger. You are now ready to use your BenjiLock. PROJECT DURATION AND LOCATION: The project started in August 2013 in Los Angeles, California and it finished in October 2016 in the same city and state. The product was unveiled for the first time to the world at the 50th edition of the 2017 CES in January in the city of Las Vegas, NV. |
PRODUCTION / REALIZATION TECHNOLOGY: BenjiLock's body is made of Stainless Steel and the shackle of Boron Alloy. The padlock includes a built-in Rechargeable Lithium-ion battery that with a single charge lasts up to a whole year based on four uses per day. Also, includes a fingerprint sensor with an ambient LED light and it comes in sky white, jet black, stainless steel, copper and brass. SPECIFICATIONS / TECHNICAL PROPERTIES: Dimensions: 4.03" (H) x 1" (W) x 2.80" (L) inches TAGS: Padlock, Fingerprint, Keys, Traditional, Sleek, Modern, Security, Locks RESEARCH ABSTRACT: Based on my personal research, the first thing I did was a patent search and nothing came up. After doing that, I performed a market research and not even the lock companies had something like this, so I decided to proceed with the patent until finally granted. Also, I created a local survey in the city of Los Angeles with over 1,000 users and 98% of the feedback wanted a padlock where they could use their fingertip to open and secure their belongings, but also have the peace of mind of the traditional key. CHALLENGE: The hardest part of the development was merging the technology of the fingerprint sensor with the traditional method of the key, so in order for the padlock to be a hybrid, it took me a long time to make sure it could work, once it did, everything else came natural. Also, padlocks haven't been redesigned in over 50 years, so it was a must for me to make sure the design was user friendly, easy and clean.
