DESIGN DETAILS
DESIGN NAME:
Eyelash Stand

PRIMARY FUNCTION:
Makeup Assistant

INSPIRATION:
The inspiration of this project came from an attempt to symbolize the metaphor of makeup from the viewpoint of behavior, product, and the geometry. Various levels of curvature come from the implication of facial and body profiles.

UNIQUE PROPERTIES / PROJECT DESCRIPTION:
This design is to discover and explore a metaphor of eyelash. Considering eyelashing is a pursuit for a personal expectation, an eyelash stand is surely qualified as an icon of life or a miniature stage for performance. The stand represents a reminiscent commitment in the morning or before going to bed, by setting eyelashes temporarily before or after they are applied. It is a way to memorize what something trivial has contributed to daily experience or personal adventure.

OPERATION / FLOW / INTERACTION:
False eyelashes can either sit on the stand temporary before wearing or rest on it after being removed from eyelids.

PROJECT DURATION AND LOCATION:
This project started from June 2014 in Taipei, Taiwan.

FITS BEST INTO CATEGORY:
Fine Arts and Art Installation Design

PRODUCTION / REALIZATION TECHNOLOGY:
Vacuum tubes were used to imply the charms released from eyes in early design stage. The tubes created a contrast between soft curvature and electric parts. The black color was also selected to be coherence with eyelash color. The 3D shape design of stand is made by parametric adjustment of free form surface. The final curvature meets the theme of this stand in multiple layers of appearances. Because the complication of the final model and delicate part of members (0.1+ mm), Selected Laser Sintering (SLS) Rapid-Prototyping (RP) technology was applied. Eyelash comes with different lengths, patterns, thicknesses, or curvatures. The curvature has to correspond to individual hair and the attaching strip. The result is a tangled series of curvature surfaces arranged in layered 3D space. Although the stand looks complicated at first glance, it actually is a symmetric shape in which an angled cut poses it in a dynamic form.

SPECIFICATIONS / TECHNICAL PROPERTIES:
15cm*15cm*18cm with nylon material inside, coated with layers of pearl-powder-based paint on top of pink paint

TAGS:
Daily ware, makeup, eyelash, metaphor

RESEARCH ABSTRACT:
The research work for this project has three-fold: the behavior, the product, and the geometry. The behavior part and metaphor part have been stated in the Project Description. For the product, there are a large number of web sites teach people how to wear eyelashes. The procedures include preparing, trimming, adjusting curvature, applying glues, anchoring, attaching, mixing with existing ones, etc. Eyelash also comes with different lengths, patterns, thicknesses, or curvatures in a pack. For the matching geometry, 3D software did the job, as the form and pattern came from the study of Shapeshifter, an Autodesk supported parametric design platform.

CHALLENGE:
Human eye(s) is a very compact interactive system. How to represent the layers of expressions and the complexity of implications becomes the main challenge to the message that the final shape reveals. The surface pattern also has to be consistent with the eyelash curve. The interaction between false eyelashes and the stand also requires a dynamic form which implies a perfect pursuit of personality.
