DESIGN NAME:
Airnemone Pavilion

PRIMARY FUNCTION:
Interactive Exhibition Pavilion

INSPIRATION:
*Please Watch Video First*-The moment we knew we have to design for Daikin; an expert in Air manipulation; we wanted to think about the idea of AIR. Most exhibition booth, no matter how inventive its aesthetic is, seems to alienate its formal design with the company product it’s featuring. We live in an age of instantaneous gratification and our attention span is shorter than ever. We knew we have to incorporate interactive elements to the design so people and the atmosphere can “Play with it”. Both me and my wife loves ocean life and I remembered during our honeymoon while snorkeling we saw several clown fish (same fish as the Finding Nemo Cartoon) playing in a sea anemone. What if the design can “float” like a sea anemone and the visitors can explore or manipulate the design like Nemo and his pals. We think focusing on bringing children into a booth is vital to the importance of a company’s projection on environmentalism to the next generation. Most people think of land and sea as totally different environment but both are engulfed in fluid dynamics which causes constant movement. In the ocean it is currents and waves while on land it is the motion of wind. Both elements are vital to all life forms survival because of oxygen and we decided to make AIR-Nemone. AIR-Nemone is a word combination of AIR and ANEMONE invented by COC design! We want to bring the sea anemone to ShangHai Xintiandi without getting you guys all wet or in a scuba suit. We took the tassel string as the de facto material to work with; due to its ultra light weight physicality any slight breeze will move it immensely. Also as a 2000 year old Chinese design invention brings a nice sense of patriotism while also reminding us of being inside a Chinese willow tree!! So come into this pulsating structure, actually come right through the strings or play hide and seek within it. Brush your hands gently through them or make them like a wig over your head, it’s all about interaction and fun. Life is constantly moving, life needs oxygen to sustain and thrive. Welcome the world’s first “movement sustaining exhibition booth”, The AIRNEMONE.

UNIQUE PROPERTIES / PROJECT DESCRIPTION:
*Please Watch Video First*- A) By using thousands of tassel strings as its cladding/partition wall; a decorative idea actually invented in China over 2000 years ago, we have created an entirely moving form dependent on wind and human interaction. This is actually coming from an inspiration of the successful Pixar movie Finding Nemo where the visitors are Nemo and the booth becomes the Sea Anemone. This is the focus of the booth to be for family with children to interact with. B) Through our research of over 50 geometrical forms. We discovered that children like to enter into anything with circular shape as it is more inviting and softer in aesthetic, that’s why AIRNEMONE is designed with several large round corners in Plan. The plan itself is also inspired by the rotational movement of a typhoon which makes the visitors have a feeling of moving through the interior of a cyclone. C) We acknowledge that the one constant quality of our world, be that in nature, business, technology or love and friendship: is of Constant Changes to revive and rejuvenate our planet of existence. AIRNEMONE is one of the only booth designs in the world that is constantly changing. With this inherent quality visitors will be “drawn” to the design similar to nature is. It also creates promotion dialogue where there is “THIS MOVING PAVILION BY WIND IN SHANGHAI” that will create great publicity for Daikin. D) By using the interlacing of white and blue strings, even the color is always morphing through the strings being blown by the wind. Because each string moves in accordance to variable amount of wind that it experiences, the whole form will be practically like a living organism in the shopping mall. E) The design allows visitors to go around it normally or even pass through the tassel string wall right into the center as they are compose of entirely soft fabric strings and utterly safe for adult and children. Because the partition is not a solid wall, it is also “lighter” in aesthetic considering the rather “enclosed” space of the Xintiandi shopping mall with limited height clearance. F) The design can be dismantled and reuse in different configuration for the future as they are made of modular components. It is one of the few stands in the world that is entirely reusable and no material needs to be thrown away; Keeping with Daikin’s theme of environmentally conscious thinking. G) We know for sure that children will consider AIRNEMONE as a big piece of interactive toy and can play “hide and seek” with each other and their parents through the strings wall. It is one of the only booths in the world where children will never be bored of just watching display products or images. This allows adults to have their own free time to entice the surroundings and drawn them into the center of the booth itself. Weekend activities such as “Yoga” and “Health Living” classes will just make this effect more prevalent!!!

OPERATION / FLOW / INTERACTION:
Kids can play hide and seek around the tassel strings. When wind is experienced the whole design pulsates. Since the partition surface is not solid anyone can pass right through the design.

PROJECT DURATION AND LOCATION:
Project started design phase in June 2016 and open to public on 2nd Sep 2016 in Shanghai Xintiandi Style shopping mall.

FITS BEST INTO CATEGORY:

RESEARCH ABSTRACT:
1) To have a design that is completely interactive to the environment and user. 2) We want to focus on drawing children into the design. As once children are attracted, parents will follow them. This is in correlation to Daikin is a company that “considers the family” and with Daikin technology they are bringing a brighter and healthier lifestyle for the current and next generation. 3) Through our research we found that children have a very short attention span and in order to draw their attention, we need to have elements of interaction. This will also in turn create dialogue in conversation with their parents which subsequently makes the parents, or potential buyers, to consider Daikin products for their family. 4) The design should be made of very low cost and light weight material yet exudes immense creativity once completed. 5) The design should “draw” visitors into the booth and not around it as most booths tend to fail in “catching visitors”.

CHALLENGE:
We wanted to rethink what a corporate exhibition is. We also wanted to prioritize children as our main audience as we know that if kids have fun, then the parents will come. We want to make a design that is highly interactive and interesting to all ages and avoid any 'barriers' on how you can enter. We also wanted a design that is constantly moving by one of the 4 primal elements of our planet as we are spreading the message on how AIR is vital to our survival and CLEAN AIR is something we need to educate our next generation as related to the well being of our planet. We also decided the design NEEDS to be recyclable as to eliminate as much wastage as possible.
