DESIGN DETAILS
DESIGN NAME:
Turn

PRIMARY FUNCTION:
Smart Connected Room Controller

INSPIRATION:
While there is much to love about the digital world, not every experience and interaction needs to be digital. Sometimes the feel of a physical device can be more satisfying in an entirely subliminal way. The last 30 years of home technology has seen a number of controls gathering by the entrance door to a room. Starting with keypads of increasing button density, this cluttered control led to integrated touch screens or a collection of controls for each element. Turn was inspired from this.

UNIQUE PROPERTIES / PROJECT DESCRIPTION:
Turn is a new generation of smart connected room control. Its uncluttered configurable interface, intuitive rotary control and clean design. Turning is so intuitive that it takes very little learning. We instinctively reach for a door knob or a dimmer switch, knowing which way to turn it. Lights on, lights off, temperature up, temperature down, blinds close, blinds open. Intensity is reliant upon speed, fine adjustments at slow speeds, a 'swipe' of the touch screen for functions and auto awake

OPERATION / FLOW / INTERACTION:
Turn is unique. A beautifully curved glass display, centred around a weighted rotating ring. Every element of Turn has been designed to create an incredible user experience. Crafted from 6000 series aluminium alloy, the knurled tactile feel allows you to adjust your surrounding like never before. Turning is so intuitive that it takes very little learning. We instinctively reach for a door knob or a dimmer switch, knowing which way to turn it. Lights on, lights off, temperature up, temperature down, blinds close, blinds open. We expect the intensity to be varied by the speed we turn the device. Fine adjustment is achieved by turning at a slower speed. Moving between functions is simple, just swipe across the screen.

PROJECT DURATION AND LOCATION:
The project started in February 2013 and the first production batch will be delivered to awaiting customers in Q1 2017.

FITS BEST INTO CATEGORY:
Interface, Interaction and User Experience Design

PRODUCTION / REALIZATION TECHNOLOGY:
The multiple components are mainly manufactured from CNC machining 6000 series Aluminium and injection moulding ABS. The wall thicknesses are on the limit of production part technology as they are so thin, in order for the product to accommodate the technology yet fit in an existing Euro Electrical Back Box.

SPECIFICATIONS / TECHNICAL PROPERTIES:
Physical dimensions 71mm Diameter x 41mm Deep

RESEARCH ABSTRACT:
Our background is designing and installing home technology and so our research for the project was gained over years of first hand experience. While there is much to love about the digital world, not every experience and interaction needs to be digital and we realised this whilst watching people carefully dragging their fingers across screens. Sometimes the feel of a physical device can be more satisfying in an entirely subliminal way. We set out to look at alternate ways to adjust things with your hands. The method for this was initially in the office, with the lid of a large water bottle being the closest thing to hand. This intuitive ease of use led to numerous 3D prints of various sizes and shapes to create something that the hand sat around comfortably. We then introduced a bearing in order to allow the dial to rotate. After passing the various iterations through the offices we arrived at a preferred size, shape and motion. We looked into various textures and materials on the edges of the dial, again running the variations through offices and a third party product design company for feedback. We used this information to determine the physical properties of Turn and then looked at the types of technology we needed to then integrate.

CHALLENGE:
The hardest part of this design activity was to put all of the technology in such a small space, in order for the product to be 'retro-fit'; into a standard UK electrical back box. We have had to build a working relationship with the display manufacturer in order to make a custom solution due to the limited space available. Some of the wall thicknesses and parts made are pushing to the the edge of CNC manufacturing capabilities.
