DESIGN DETAILS
DESIGN NAME:
Warner Music Hong Kong

PRIMARY FUNCTION:
Workplace Office

INSPIRATION:
The design inhabits the top floor of an office building, with views across the bay to Hong Kong Island. The challenge was to maintain the openness of the space by maximising views, while creating a comfortable and inhabitable environment that would support both local artists and Warner Music staff by improving interactions across the company.

UNIQUE PROPERTIES / PROJECT DESCRIPTION:
Bean Buro has created a 19,000sqft headquarters for Warner Music in Hong Kong. Inspired by the rich music heritage of the company, design palette incorporates classic materials, such as timber, natural leather, textile fabrics and brushed bronze finishes. The architectural surfaces are kept clean with subtle details, including metal trims and leather handles, complemented by a mixture of Asian and European furniture.

OPERATION / FLOW / INTERACTION:
An open, cafe-like space forms the social hub of the office and acts as a welcoming area for guests and an informal workspace for staff. The stage area is elevated as a box volume, which contains a music room, artist room and executive office. Audiovisual equipment is incorporated into the design for performances and DJ sessions. Views out into the city are maintained, creating an open, light filled environment.

PROJECT DURATION AND LOCATION:
The project started in October 2015 in Hong Kong and finished in March 2016.

FITS BEST INTO CATEGORY:
Interior Space and Exhibition Design

PRODUCTION / REALIZATION TECHNOLOGY:
The timber element incorporates informal seating areas, display niches for musical instruments and vinyls, acoustically insulated phone booths, efficient concealed storages, and expands spatially to form a stage area and semi enclosed rooms. Combining dark and light timber with metal and leather details, the architectural element defines the otherwise simple space, and houses a boardroom and two private offices that are partially visible through clear glass walls.

SPECIFICATIONS / TECHNICAL PROPERTIES:
Custom designed furniture items enhance the space, and act as a subtle nod to the history of the music industry; wheeled storage units, inspired by touring suitcases, provide discreet storage for staff, the feature boardroom table is finished with a brushed brass surface, reflecting the materiality of brasswind instruments, while the recessed company logo in the entrance lobby is reminiscent of traditional leather instrument cases.

RESEARCH ABSTRACT:
Integrated planters help to define the space for each department while maintaining daylight and views across the harbour. Areas in the office are also marked out by floor finishes. In the central cafe and performance space, epoxy flooring is intended to evoke the industrial history of the area while, in the workspaces, timber flooring gives a warm, domestic feeling.

CHALLENGE:
The challenge was to maintain the openness of the space by maximising views, while creating a comfortable and inhabitable environment that would support both local artists and Warner Music staff and subsequently improving interactions across the company.

CLIENT/STUDIO/BRAND DETAILS
NAME:
Bean Buro

PROFILE:
The studio is an emerging architecture and interiors practice from London and Paris, led by Lorène Faure and Kenny Kinugasa-Tsui, with a team of international designers to provide architecture, interior, installation, furniture and product design services. The Hong Kong studio was opened in 2013. The diversity of the practice with its collaborators reinforces a core vision for the practice: to respond to the exchanges of global cultural narratives, incorporating overlapping design disciplines specializing in the social, economical and political production of urban spaces. We believe architecture is an emotional, spatial experience produced by both the user and the author. Our design methodologies stem from the observation, speculation and analysis of contextual narratives. These narratives, or ‘stories’, generate dynamic exchanges of historical, environmental, cultural and social factors, resulting in highly inventive interventions while preserving plenty of intellectual wit. COLLABean, as an integrated part of Bean Buro, is a trans-disciplinary platform for collaborations between practice, research and academia. COLLABean can provide design research services for business organisations, and wherever appropriate, to involve specialists’ input from a network of highly reputable designers, academicians and researchers in the design field. The practice has since produced a string of successful interior architecture projects for luxury residential clients as well as workplace designs for reputable companies such as Cheil, Leo Burnett, Warner Music, and has been awarded Silver Winner in the Asia Pacific Interior Design Award 2015, Runner Up in Architizer A+ Awards 2015, Gold, Silver & Bronze Winner in the A’ Design Awards, and Finalist Winner of the 13th Modern Decoration International Media Award. The studio has a rigorous methodology of exploring spatial narratives through conceptual drawings and models that explore the humanistic aspects of design, and has been featured on Archdaily, Elle Decor and Wallpaper* Magazine.
