| DESIGN NAME: XX Stool PRIMARY FUNCTION: Multifunctional INSPIRATION: The inspiration came from user needs. I've done a broad research about small spaces, and collapsing/multifunc UNIQUE PROPERTIES / PROJECT DESCRIPTION: What makes my design unique is the way that it brings completely different functions in a simple and a innovative way. The XXStool functions as a stool, a side table and a storage space for your books. Moreover, because it is designed for small spaces, it collapses, so it is easy to store. The simple XX design allows the stool to be light however very stable, and aesthetically simple. OPERATION / FLOW / INTERACTION: The stool can be easily collapsed and opened again due to the light materials. The materials are light yet the structure they form when standing gives the stool a really good stability. The stool can be used as a side table due to it's height ( 63 cm), higher then the usual stools and chairs. The X's - legs- can be used as storage space for your books. This design brings 3 different functions to 1. PROJECT DURATION AND LOCATION: This project started in February 2016 in London, finished in May 2016, London. PRODUCTION / REALIZATION TECHNOLOGY: I've aimed that my design would be very simple yet so functional, so the production type should've been simple as well. I've tried to stick to the most simplest and the easiest way possible. My design only requires 8 screws and 6 bolts&nuts. There are 4 u braces used and 4 cubes to secure the legs. I've used 12mm birch plywood with satin varnish. I've also added 3mm steels at top and bottom to add some weight and increase stability. SPECIFICATIONS / TECHNICAL PROPERTIES: 386.000mm x 350.000 mm x 630.000mm TAGS: Multifunctional, xxstool, furniture, collapsible RESEARCH ABSTRACT: My research has started when I read an article about the effects of increasing population to the spaces we live. I did lots of primary and secondary research including questionnaires with people who live in small spaces. What I've realised trough out my research was that most of the existing designs had 2 functions and there were not really 'small'. After my research I focused on the data on the questionnaire. People who live in small spaces needed more seating, more storage and smaller tables. Moving on from here, firstly I tried to bring 2 of these functions together which was hard to decide which combination to focus on. Then I convinced myself to try and take my design to the next level and solve all these 3 together. CHALLENGE: The most challenging part of this design was finding the right structure for the legs. I've spent 2 weeks on the structure of the legs trying to find the most simple and the most stable. The first models were not collapsing, so in the in the middle of the process I've decided to make it collapsible so the project changed direction...
