| DESIGN NAME: Coexistence of New York City PRIMARY FUNCTION: Jewelry INSPIRATION: I designed a jewelry inspired by New York City. The city I've lived for 8 years has a quite unique urban environment. It has a huge public park as known as the Central Park, at the center of the city and all the building structures cover surrounding the park. That scene gives me a strong inspiration about the topic, coexistence of industry and nature. UNIQUE PROPERTIES / PROJECT DESCRIPTION: It is a pendant for necklace. It depicts an aerial image of Manhattan, NYC representing the scene of coexistence of industry and nature. I want to present how modern people lived with nature in a harmonic way through the design. It is a microcosm of the city view so that you could see the NYC skylines when you see it on the every which side. Various diamond colors combination could express all different times, seasons and moments of NYC. OPERATION / FLOW / INTERACTION: It can be used as a normal necklace functionally so that people who love the beauty of NYC's urban nature could carry it on their person all the time. Through this, I desire people to think about how we are living with nature in this planet and furthermore make them consider how we can coexist well continually. To make people feel more empathy, I would make it in custom versions with different colors of diamonds for those who want to keep their own NYC around their necks. There would be a lot of their own impressions such as 4 seasons expressions, day and night etc. PROJECT DURATION AND LOCATION: The project started in January 2014 in New York City and finished in June 23 2016 in Seoul, and it was exhibited in Seoul in July 2016. |
PRODUCTION / REALIZATION TECHNOLOGY: It was drawn in CAD program, Casting and Finishing including setting the gems are all done by hand. It is made out of platinum for frame and the highest graded diamonds for the contents. Diamonds(gem) represents its urban nature, the central park. Platinum structures(metal) representing industrial buildings of NYC means industry and man. SPECIFICATIONS / TECHNICAL PROPERTIES: 9.4mmx22.7mmx2.5mm/ Diamond colors arrangement may vary by expressing the four seasons. TAGS: Pendant, Necklace, Fine Jewelry, Urban Nuature, Central Pakr, Coexistence, Impression, NYC RESEARCH ABSTRACT: All is based on my own experiences with living in New York. Through pictures I've taken and impressions I got from there, this project could be going on. I majored Industrial Design from Parsons school of Design(NY) so based on my background I could already have most skills to make something even jewelry in real such as idealizing, modeling, casting and finishing. Only for the electric-gilding step, some experts in the real market advised me. CHALLENGE: Since I don't want to expose any extra connection part shown out of the pendant itself, I should pay really close attention to find the ideal size of the chain hole invisibly. I precisely measured the size of the city through the aerial pictures again and again then scaled it down to found the best size for the jewelry because all materials are too valuable to just explore for a lot of trials. In social perspective view, NYC's scene could be interpreted in different way from my view about the coexistence, so I needed to interview as many as people to hear diverse thoughts. It was interesting process. NAME: Olivia Ko PROFILE: Olivia Ko is her English name and she used to use it like a brand name at her design career. It has been shown at many areas she ranged over such as Illustration, Product design, Jewelry design and even Furniture design. The latest works under this name are such as LG cosmetic brand 'Belif''s BB cushion package design and her fine jewelry works for the 1st solo exhibition of 2016 in Seoul, S.Korea. |
