DESIGN DETAILS
DESIGN NAME:
Mesh

PRIMARY FUNCTION:
Lampshade

INSPIRATION:
The inspiration comes from expanded metal, using patterns to increase the volume of the product but still using as less material as possible. We also wanted to integrate the end-user in the product and let them give it a personal touch, so the end-user dosen't just buy a product and put it up but actually need to interact and give it a personal touch, making every single product unique. Also we choose to use copper for two reasons, one for the softness and two it works as a natural reflector.

UNIQUE PROPERTIES / PROJECT DESCRIPTION:
Mesh is a lampshade that comes as a flat package, only 0,5mm thick. The end-user can then shape the lampshade to whatever shape they desire. The end-user can also buy two of the product and connect them to have both a top and bottom part, there is already an integrated system for fastening two parts together in the product, so the end-user do not need any extra tools or products to do so.

OPERATION / FLOW / INTERACTION:
The lampshade is easy to both install and shape, when the user receives mesh it is only 0,5mm thick. The end-user can use their bare hands to carefully shape the lampshade into any desired shape. And if they want to use two parts(top and bottom parts) they can simply use the integrated connection system with consist of 5 small tabs on each part the you push out, connect the parts and push back in. Before the user connects the parts they can simple screw on the lamp socket and the lightbulb.

PROJECT DURATION AND LOCATION:
The project started during August 2015 and was finished in February 2016, it was then exhibited in the Talents section of Ambiente 2016.

Lighting Products and Fixtures Design

PRODUCTION / REALIZATION TECHNOLOGY:
A lot of testing was made to get the right pattern, the plus pattern was the best in the term of how to be most efficient in the production as we use water jet to cut the pattern, we considered using laser but the heat would be a problem for heat marks and making the copper less strong. As for the pattern using plus we only need to make two cuts that intersect with each other, but at the same time giving the expanding possibility and a really nice pattern.

SPECIFICATIONS / TECHNICAL PROPERTIES:

RESEARCH ABSTRACT:
We started off to research on expanded metal and how it works. When we had the knowledge of that we started to test different materials to test the reflection and the strength, the strength was tested in two ways, one was how easy it was to bend it by hand and secondary how much it could expand and be shaped without breaking. The pattern was the hardest part to solve as we wanted the product to be manufactured as easy and quick as possible but at the same time be able to work as intended. A lot of trying to see what kind of pattern was easiest to manufacture and most time- and cost efficient.

CHALLENGE:
One of the biggest challenge in this project was to determine the shape of the lampshade. Since we don't determine the end shape but the user does. We tried almost 20 different shapes before determine that the circular shape was best suited since you could make a dome like shape and it's a kind of neutral shape that can easily be matched with other items and shapes in the surroundings. The other challenge was the pattern which we mentioned earlier.
