DESIGN DETAILS
DESIGN NAME:
Beauty

PRIMARY FUNCTION:
Hand-knotted Rug

INSPIRATION:
Beauty is inspired by the characteristics our faces and the secrets they reveal or conceal. Bold, strong colors of contrasting tones of golds, oranges and purples add a sense of drama to the features of the woman. Using innovated new techniques of twisted silk yarns with long threads and flat looped knots, a modern abstract pattern is created when viewed closely. Being aware of the earth and our own responsibility to its environment we carefully work to use the finest natural fibers of wool and silk. Wool is 100% sustainable and a renewable natural resource that is recycled into the yarns.

UNIQUE PROPERTIES / PROJECT DESCRIPTION:
Beauty is inspired by our individual personalities and the power of the Face. Each Face reveals the map of our lives as it conceals and often define us. Using bold tones of purple, oranges and greys , body art is applied to enhance or to camouflage the feature of the woman. Textures are introduced to add a third dimension to the face by long silk yarns over lapping each other as the strong colours stand next to each other revealing and concealing the design. The long silk yarns are flattened or raised as they form shadows across the face give a further depth of wisdom across of the map of the face becomes the personality of the design.

OPERATION / FLOW / INTERACTION:
The design opens up new ways of taking old traditions into the modern way of thinking. With the skilled artisans techniques of hand-weaving, this quality will last for years and outlive machine made designs.

PROJECT DURATION AND LOCATION:
The design concept was started in April 2015 and it took about seven months to hand weave in India.

FITS BEST INTO CATEGORY:
Furniture Design

PRODUCTION / REALIZATION TECHNOLOGY:
The technique of double-dipping the handspun yarn enhances the colour variations on the yarn before weaving. Dip-dyed yarns give gradations in colour that can range from subtle colourways to a stronger boldness as it intensifies.

SPECIFICATIONS / TECHNICAL PROPERTIES:
The design is woven in Tibetan knot to a high quality of 110 knots only using the highest quality of 100% Handspun silks. The size is 2500mm by 3000mm.

RESEARCH ABSTRACT:
Having over twenty years as an interior designer, I learned that a rug had a strong effect on all interiors. I set up my own company with a different design philosophy which was missing from the market. My instinct was to create designs that were artistic and which were created from my own experience rather than just patterns.

CHALLENGE:
One of the rewarding challenges was to work with the skilled artisans who brought with them generations of techniques but whose vision of design was rooted in their older traditions. I had to work with them to understand my visions and to challenge their own ideas of what a rug design was all about. It was not until the rug was finished, that they saw the vision. It was very rewarding to see their satisfaction and pride on something they had never made before and now had become part of them too.

NAME:
Ayka Design

PROFILE:
Ayka design is the brainchild of Karen Michelle Evans, award winning Interior designer who won the 2013 Best Interior Designer in the Commercial Interior Awards in Dubai. Michelle set up her own boutique rug company, Ayka Design in 2013 and launched its first collections to the design world in Domotex 2014, winning the Best Studio Artist and Best Innovation in the Carpet Design Awards 2015. As a designer, Michelle's approach behind the design of each individual rug is its story. It inspires her to be bold and not to be afraid of current trends. This strength creates the soul in each rug which is far beyond one single element of the designer's journey. The design is interpreted from a different perspective, as it is not just a rug, it is art itself. The rug’s journey starts from an inspiration, to paper, to colour, to the loom and finally, to the many hands that will patiently create it slowly and meticulously over the ensuing months.
