DESIGN DETAILS
DESIGN NAME:
Joint

PRIMARY FUNCTION:
Table

INSPIRATION:
The world is expecting the future of manufacturing to be changed with the introduction of new technology tools. The Joint is about finding new ways to design and develop artistic yet functional furniture.

UNIQUE PROPERTIES / PROJECT DESCRIPTION:
The Joint is a corner piece for furniture, created using a 3D printer, providing a simple way to build your own furniture. The Joint is a fully customizable furniture for the different user needs and home environments, simply buy the wood and build any size furniture you want.

OPERATION / FLOW / INTERACTION:
It takes only about 10 minutes to build the furniture if you have the wood cut out to the right size already. The size and material of the table is variable depends on what the user wants to use.

PROJECT DURATION AND LOCATION:
The project stared in April 2015 in West Lafayette, IN, and finished in August 2015, and was exhibited at Patti & Rusty Rueff Galleries in November 2015.

PRODUCTION / REALIZATION TECHNOLOGY:
One simply uses 2 inches by 4 inches studs and 3 quarter inches panels to build any size office desks, coffee tables, or even benches. The wood materials can be purchased at any local hardware or lumber store. Since the materials can be cut down to the sizes at the store, the users don not need to have any of the special equipment to build the furniture at home.

SPECIFICATIONS / TECHNICAL PROPERTIES:
The sample desk shown in the image is built with 7 dollars worth 3 quarter inches particle board, 5 dollars worth 2 inches by 4 inches studs, and 22 dollars worth 3D printing materials, so the total cost of the desk was 34 dollars. The cost can be variable, depends on the size the furniture and quality of the materials used.

RESEARCH ABSTRACT:
Collected many case studies in 3D printer technology and application of the tool. 3D printers became a new tool for developing prototypes, but has not been used for actual production. The intent of the project is to find better ways to use the tool to build a product for everyday use.

CHALLENGE:
3D printers have many limitations of building objects based on the shape, size, materials, and etc. So the object need to be carefully created with all the limitations.
