| DESIGN NAME: Core PRIMARY FUNCTION: Sound System INSPIRATION: The Core is the product of 3 years of intense research and development that started with one very simple question: ‘Why can’t a small beautiful speaker sound large and life-like?’ Working with a community of innovative scientists, engineers, designers, musicians and creative partners, the Core was developed with 3 key tenets in mind: functional design, stunning sound and freedom for the listener. We leveraged cutting edge technologies to create most advanced wireless speaker system ever. UNIQUE PROPERTIES / PROJECT DESCRIPTION: The Core is a revolutionary compact Wireless Sound System that delivers ‘BETTER THAN STEREO’ sound. An advanced technology called Wave Field Synthesis produces a stereo sound field that is astonishing in size and sound quality. It's like listening to a pair of widely spaced hi-fi speakers, except it's coming from a device that's small enough to hold in your hand. Unlike traditional stereo systems, The Core envelopes every listener in the room in a breathtaking multi-dimensional sonic image. OPERATION / FLOW / INTERACTION: The Core is a fully integrated speaker system with wireless functionalities that requires no app to operate. Users can stream music via Bluetooth, a technology that we chose on purpose for its ease of use. Every smartphone comes equipped with Bluetooth, hence users are not required to download anything to play music. Where the Core excels in simplicity, is with the multi-room functionality. Our “one-button connect” functionality means it’s easy to distribute immersive sound throughout your home. No WiFi needed. Each Core speaker can either broadcast or receive our proprietary 5 GHz multi-room signal to fill any home with riveting sound. PROJECT DURATION AND LOCATION: The project started in 2012 in Toronto and was first demonstrated at CES Las Vegas in 2013. In the autumn of 2014 we promoted the Core as a crowdfunding initiative on Indiegogo that exceeded objectives by 2300% raising over $1.5M and being the top rated Canadian campaign at the time. PRODUCTION / REALIZATION TECHNOLOGY: What makes the Core innovative is its Wave Field Synthesis technology that creates a holographic sound image unmatched by competitors. The Core is able to hook up to every system and easily connects up to 8 additional units. It has Bluetooth connectivity and runs on a battery with a 12-hour life making the unit portable. It offers optical input so users can connect to Apple TV, Roku, or their cable box. Finally, the Core works with every music streaming service, cloud library, or home network. Getting the technologies to work together seamlessly while providing a simple user experience was a challenge. However, the hardest part of the design activity was to create a powerful, life-like sound from one single small box. We wanted to have a speaker system as small as the sound precision would allow and worked on refining the format several times.
