Tulpi-bin

Waste bin

INSPIRATION:
Tulpi-bin is designer Marco Manders latest design, a new addition to the Tulpi product line inspired by the Tulip. Marco Manders visionary designs are genuinely eye-catching not just for their organic shapes, which are constant reminders of the beauty of nature, but primarily because they epitomise the importance of social design. This designer embraces the cohesion of environment and people, playfully contributing to, and thus enhancing, the value, appearance and importance of our surroundings.

UNIQUE PROPERTIES / PROJECT DESCRIPTION:
With its cheerful and eye-catching appearance Tulpi-bin creates an atmosphere that will encourage people to actually have fun throwing away their garbage. The Tulpi-bin is constructed from a solid round steel post with a welded container tray. A separate inside waste liner provides a large capacity for waste. The whole is enclosed by 3 curved composite petals. Tulpi-bin is designed to withstand the stringent requirements for public furniture.

OPERATION / FLOW / INTERACTION:
The Tulpi-bin can be equipped with different kind of inserts i.e ashtray, stench damper and firework-proof closure. To empty the bin, unlock the three petals at the top for easy access to the removable inner tray. Also an optional full electronic opening and closure system is available. The petals are connected to ensure movement at the same time. The double curved surface makes the design less sensitive to vandalism and provides resistance to pasting posters and stickers. It also has a coating that makes the bin graffiti-proof.

RESEARCH ABSTRACT:
We did exploratory and testing research. We looked at the current streetscape in multiple cities. Internet: if the design already existed. We participated in a Dutch government seminar about litter to obtain observations and comments of experts, and reach a wider audience. Several prototypes were shown at various fairs and events. Vandal proof and safety tests were also performed.

CHALLENGE:
The biggest challenge was to keep the shape of a tulip and built in all features. Also to use a good and working fold-system, to let the petals close properly.

NAME:
Tulpi BV

PROFILE:
Tulpi-design is based in Nieuwegein, The Netherlands, founded in April 2011 and owned by designer Marco Manders. Marco Manders started his business in graphic design more then thirty years ago. He gradually gained interest in product design. He entered his idea for the Tulpi-seat during a Dutch government pitch, an event where professionals were invited to enter their new design ideas for public space design. By that time Manders had fallen in love with design for public spaces. The Tulpi-seat and Tulpi-bin are designed to create more fun and color in our outdoor environments. The organic design is an ode to the tulip. Tulpi’s are high quality products: not only the exterior was a major focus point during the product development, he has also put a lot of work into the functional features.Tulpi’s are highly innovative: the folding element of the chair guarantees a dry and clean seat and the movable petals of the Tulpi-bin are protecting the inner waste-bin. Tulpi’s are typical Dutch Design, which we can characterise as: minimalistic, experimental, innovative, quirky and humorous.
