Structo Lamp by Naty Moskovich & Iddo Zimmerman

DESIGN DETAILS
DESIGN NAME:
Structo

PRIMARY FUNCTION:
Lamp

INSPIRATION:
Inspired by urban landscapes, the design concept was born while traveling in Hong Kong, and being impressed by the multitude of temporary scaffolding structures that are so commonplace. These brilliant temporary structures for construction purposes seem effortless both in existence and function. The Structo lamp follows the same principles – a minimalistic structure, quick to assemble and disassemble, with a distinctive form for the purpose of elevating light to task illumination height.

UNIQUE PROPERTIES / PROJECT DESCRIPTION:
Structo incorporates LED light guide technology to produce uniform light distribution and reduced glare, while emphasizing the elegant simplicity of beech wood and aluminum materials and construction. The result is a versatile light with the capability to simultaneously provide both direct task illumination and ambient lighting, as well as the flexibility to cast light in any direction with 360 degrees of rotation.

OPERATION / FLOW / INTERACTION:
A capacitance touch switch on the lamp powers the lamp on and off, and Bluetooth wireless dimming control is done through the "Curio Remote" mobile app.

PROJECT DURATION AND LOCATION:
The Design was initiated in Munich, Germany by the creative design team in 2014, while the light engine technology was developed in Taiwan in parallel by the engineering team. Production began in July 2015.

FITS BEST INTO CATEGORY:
Lighting Products and Fixtures Design

PRODUCTION / REALIZATION TECHNOLOGY:
The Structo lamp incorporates state-of-the-art light guide optical technology, adapted from the image scanner industry. The optics generate an extremely uniform light that eliminates hot spots and multiple shadows, while also reducing glare and providing dual illumination: 90% of the LED-emitted light is directed downwards and 10% is emitted upwards as diffused ambient light tinted with the lamp cover color.

SPECIFICATIONS / TECHNICAL PROPERTIES:
Product dimensions: Height: 60cm Depth: 35cm Width: 60cm Package size: 73x13x5cm

RESEARCH ABSTRACT:
Two main principles were central to the Structo design: Innovative Light – The use of light guide optics results in a 'light stick' that elicits childlike wonder and improves on the quality of light transmitted by LEDs. Simplicity - The easiest, yet elegant and sophisticated way of elevating the 'light stick' to task light height. The Structo lamp design was born while visiting Hong Kong, and being impressed by the liveliness of the city - not its fabled sky scrapers or futuristic scenery, but by the humblest of objects: temporary constructions, particularly 'low-tech' scaffolding surrounding high tech buildings. A sprawling metropolis such as Hong Kong is an embodiment of the modern pace of change, evolving space, constantly shifting scenarios, and the fluid nature of our times. Hanging in the balance between the permanent and the temporary, a fascinating story is being told, if one only cares to listen. Inspired by that backdrop, Structo is that narrative: a mix of the permanent and temporary; easy to construct and easy to take apart; deceptively simple in appearance achievable only through extensive creative effort and technology, an object both fleeting and enduring.

CHALLENGE:
Structo was designed as the inaugural launch product of a new emerging design studio, Curio Design. The Structo's objective is to translate Curio Design’s vision and values into a product experience, a symbol of everything Curio stands for: contemporary creative approach, youthful spirit, innovative thinking, form challenge, profound simplicity, and social responsibility.
