DESIGN DETAILS
DESIGN NAME:
Spiral Stool

PRIMARY FUNCTION:
Stool

INSPIRATION:
Spiral Stool is developed with the idea of creating structural module, which can hold around 100 kg weight for seating usage, with only cardboard material. With fine-tuned detail and precisely manufactured pieces, the stool can be assembled without any glue or hardware.

UNIQUE PROPERTIES / PROJECT DESCRIPTION:
Spiral Stool is a cardboard folded structure, which requires no glue or hardware for its assembly. The Rotated squares on top and bottom create unique fractal elevation, reflects lights in different angles. Spiral Stool can also use as modular units to configure as a low table.

OPERATION / FLOW / INTERACTION:
Spiral is DIY cardboard stool, which can be unfolded and recycled. By following simple assembly manual, you can finish it within 15 minutes without any hardware nor glue. The high quality recyclable cardboard creates beautiful and tight surface for people to sit and/or use as low table.

PROJECT DURATION AND LOCATION:
Spiral Stool is developed early 2014 to install in the cardboard pavilion, which is also designed by MisoSoupDesign. After several design development and testing structural system, it is exhibited at Taipei Creative Expo in May 2015. Spiral Stool is expected to launch 2nd half of 2015 in Taiwanese and Japanese market.

PRODUCTION / REALIZATION TECHNOLOGY:
Spiral Stool is initially produced with CNC cardboard manufacturing technique, and later developed with cardboard mold cutting for mass production. The 3 mm cardboard sheets are cut with specific dimensions with folding lines, which allows stool to be assembled with clean fractal lines.

SPECIFICATIONS / TECHNICAL PROPERTIES:
Material: 3 mm cardboard Dimension: 38 cm (W), 38 cm (D), 45 cm (H) Package: 90 (W) cm x 60 cm (D) x 3 cm (H)

RESEARCH ABSTRACT:
Spiral Stool is the part of research development of cardboard structure system without applying any glue or hardware. The structural strength is created with the material property and surface friction. Due to the high recyclability of cardboard material, the range of furniture or self-standing structure, which made with cardboard, can minimize the environmental impact caused by human activities in the area. Our research is to test and develop farther application in cardboard along with creating interesting and unique design.

CHALLENGE:
Due to its structural system and using no hardware nor glue, the most challenging aspect of designing Spiral Stool is the precise dimension and accurate manufacturing. A few prototypes are created to test the joint and test the tolerance of cardboard material. The structure becomes weak when the joint gap exceeds even 1 mm. The dimension and design change happened a few times to achieve perfect fitting.
