DESIGN DETAILS
DESIGN NAME:
Boundary

PRIMARY FUNCTION:
Rug

INSPIRATION:
Boundary has inspired by an old map that has been displayed at the museum. The way of delineations, capturing dynamic mountain ridges and boundary of the land, its topography was highly symbolic, informative and aesthetic. The idea came up with strong feeling that a map could be a textile and used for multi purposes such as home wares in our daily life.

UNIQUE PROPERTIES / PROJECT DESCRIPTION:
The shape of Boundary is strange, abstract and absolutely asymmetry. The hand drawn topographic patterns provide unique character and sensory experiences that create emotional value reflecting geographic information. These patterns are not simply chosen for its beauty or due to personal preference. Designer also wanted to represent the region where certain territory disputes occur and aimed to remind people social issues in an elegant way.

OPERATION / FLOW / INTERACTION:
Firstly, Boundary functions as a great special accent either in private or public space. Also, the backside is waterproofed surface it can be used for outdoor as well. Secondly, the topographic patterns turn into an elegant and informative flat art reflecting cultural issues. It will stimulate users to think beyond the obvious and make them culturally connected.

PROJECT DURATION AND LOCATION:
The project started in March 2014 and was completed in September 2014 in Basel, Switzerland.

FITS BEST INTO CATEGORY:
Furniture Design

PRODUCTION / REALIZATION TECHNOLOGY:
Design is easily customizable to suit different settings or spaces. Patterns can be applied for various functions such as lampshades, cushions, curtains etc. Also, the other regional topographical images can be produced for next series. The material is synthetic leather made of recycled materials for easy maintenance and durability.

SPECIFICATIONS / TECHNICAL PROPERTIES:
2mx1.6m. Size customisable Although based on the same pattern, each rug is completely unique in different scale, material, and parts.

RESEARCH ABSTRACT:
Design thinking has started with one question how we can approach topography design differently in our daily life? Then Research was done based on 3 fields of social issues, aesthetic aspects and innovative materials. The prototypes have been developed using actual size of paper models, experimented in various scales and different parts.

CHALLENGE:
Rugs create spatial accents and they are often symmetry shape with repetitive patterns or neutral in appearance. The goal was to challenge to depart from this simple fact. I was also interested in socially engaging designs that people can interact with and that make them to notice social issues.
