Lale Dingbat typeface by Parson Michael

DESIGN DETAILS
DESIGN NAME:
Lale

PRIMARY FUNCTION:
Dingbat typeface

INSPIRATION:
Lale was inspired by the Ottoman motifs that I discovered while visiting Istanbul. While exploring the Opentype options that are available to type design, I started to question how I could combine the flexibility of these features with the world of dingbat typefaces. The result was a dingbat font that incorporates Opentype features to automatically replace the form, the function allowing me to create a type tool that is simple to use yet vast and diverse in its application and results.

UNIQUE PROPERTIES / PROJECT DESCRIPTION:
With the design of the Lale dingbat typeface, my aim was to use Opentype technology to enhance the possibilities of so called picture fonts. By combining the substitution features included in ligatures, this font does not only offer the basic 52 symbols, but rather plays with various glyph combinations to offer 156 different signs that can then be combined with 30 different stems. The result, is over 4800 design solutions that can easily be accessed by a sequence of letters or numbers; the keyboard has just become your best design tool.

OPERATION / FLOW / INTERACTION:
This typeface uses the Opentype technology that allows automatic substitution of a string of letters. For this typeface, a user can simply type a sequence of repeating letters to generate an ever more complex flower motif.

PROJECT DURATION AND LOCATION:
The basis of this project has been brewing for many years but it was only in early 2013 that it finally started to take shape. After more than 4000 hours of work, spent drawing and then scripting in FontLab, the typeface was finally released in September 2014 through the Typogama foundry and through other typeface distribution outlets throughout the world. Despite being inspired by Turkey, this project was created and completed in Geneva, Switzerland.

FITS BEST INTO CATEGORY:
Graphics, Illustration and Visual Communication Design

PRODUCTION / REALIZATION TECHNOLOGY:
The initial drawings where created in Adobe Illustrator, they where then exported and placed into Fontlab where they where generated as a single dingbat typeface in the Opentype format (.otf).

SPECIFICATIONS / TECHNICAL PROPERTIES:
As a typeface, Lale has no specific size constrains and was created to be used in any size. However, it is better suited for use in large sizes where the details can be revealed. As an Opentype typeface, this font can be installed on all operating systems however, a user will need to use a desktop publishing software, like Adobe or Quark, that supports the Opentype features to access all the connected forms. In a non Opentype software, like Text Edit, only the basic 52 glyphs will be visible.

TAGS:
Dingbat, Typeface, Floral, Opentype, Ligatures, Ottoman, Generative, Design, Graphics, Symbol, Sign, Nature.

RESEARCH ABSTRACT:
The first steps of this project was to research and attempt to fully understand the style and constraints found in Ottoman art by exploring pictures I had taken, images found across the internet and a few books I had found. Having completed the research, the next phase was to create all the possible variants, which is over 4000 different combinations, firstly as simple line vectors that where then converted to outlines and refined to correct certain errors that Adobe Illustrator produces.

CHALLENGE:
The two major challenges of this design where the actual motif drawings and their integration into a working typeface. I wanted to be original with my designs yet also have a link to the traditional Ottoman forms. The integration side was probably the more difficult task, although not technically very complex, the sheer size of the variables meant that every task had to be repeated thousands of times and to be very vigilant that every option actually worked as specified.
