| DESIGN NAME: Gorilla®-mobile: Smartphone alarm system PRIMARY FUNCTION: Smartphone Alarm System INSPIRATION: On a party a companioned lady cried totally upset, her mascara started to dissolve: "My Smartphone has been stolen, all is away, my phone number, all my contacts, my Whats-App chats, all my photos and even the video from our Palau holiday! All gone ! They have stolen my identity." That was the central moment of inspiration for this world first product. UNIQUE PROPERTIES / PROJECT DESCRIPTION: Gorilla-mobile is the world first real alarm system for smartphones and tablets. It is pure Hardware and needs no App on the Smartphone, it uses a key, which is integrated into the design. When a user wants to protect the Smartphone, the user simply plugs the product with the integrated cables between charger and Smartphone, then the user pulls out an electronic key and then the Smartphone or the charger cannot be disconnect anymore, without that a very loud Alarm bell rings. OPERATION / FLOW / INTERACTION: When a charging Smartphone has to be protected from opportunistic theft, Gorilla-mobile is simply plugged in between the charging line and the key is plugged out, the device blinks to show that the Smartphone is protected. This makes the Smartphone tethered to the wall, a thief cannot disconnect anything without the alarm bell starting. Also a loop as shown in the photos can be made to tether a Tablet or Laptop or handbag electrically to a secure object, nobody can steal without the alarm belling. PROJECT DURATION AND LOCATION: Project started in October 2014 and Market launch is in May 2015. Standard Project Management methods were used for running the project. PRODUCTION / REALIZATION TECHNOLOGY: On the industrial design we searched for an iconic design, which is producible with standard molding techniques. We chose to use PC-ABS for the body and Polycarbonate Ring in the middle, this Ring is translucent and a blinking LED behind shows when the smartphone is protected. Also the lid, which has several technical reasons, could be made of aluminium or similar, to bring an even more valuable look and feel. The key is integrated into the design. Different color can be used for the 3 molds. SPECIFICATIONS / TECHNICAL PROPERTIES: The product is 98mm long, 54 mm at the broadest side and it is 18mm thick, important is that it slides very easy into a pocket and is very simple to use, only cable need to be connected and a key has to be released. TAGS: Smartphone Alarm, Gorilla mobile, Tablet Alarm, Anti-theft protection, mobile alarm system RESEARCH ABSTRACT: Gorilla-mobile is the world first alarm system for Smartphones and Tablets, therefore in many team meetings an unique, iconic design has been researched, using 3 different molds for body, transparent middle ring and key, which can be molded using standard tools, so that the product can be sold on the mass market, but still has a iconic quality appearance. Rapid prototypes have been used to test all construction details, FMEA has given additional enhancements. Functional tests used precise samples CHALLENGE: The main challenge was to combine a form factor, which fits into the category of a Smartphone Accessory, so has to be small and tiny, a very loud alarm sirene and a mass market capable Design Engineering, so the device has to be stable and all components need to fit into the tiny design.
