DESIGN NAME:
Windmill stool

PRIMARY FUNCTION:
Multifunctional Stool

INSPIRATION:
The three legged stool was one of projects when Xian was studying MA in Kingston University London. The inspiration derived from his childhood experience that folding three narrow strip of papers together to be a windmill toy. Xian was thinking that windmill toy could be possible to become a three legged stool as the toy has three blades. Finally, he cut each blade of windmill toy in triangle shape to become the stool legs and developed the stool structure to be able to supporting an adult weight.

UNIQUE PROPERTIES / PROJECT DESCRIPTION:
The Windmill stool is not only a stool, but also is a functional decoration in a living space. The stool is unique with geometrical forms. it is a complicated structure but simple to be assembled, which 3 pieces of metal sheet make up the legs and 1 triangle metal sheet on the top of stool, each piece of metal sheet is connected by screws only. Additionally, the hollow space between seat and legs can be put books or magazines.

OPERATION / FLOW / INTERACTION:
This is a multifunctional stool, which people could sit on it or put books and magazines into the hollow space. Additionally, three or more windmill stools line up together to be a sidetable or an attractive decoration.

PROJECT DURATION AND LOCATION:
This project started in October 2013 and finished in January 2014 in Kingston University London.

FITS BEST INTO CATEGORY:
Furniture Design

PRODUCTION / REALIZATION TECHNOLOGY:
Xian have tested a series of materials to make 1:1 prototype, such as wood, plastic and metal. Finally, 1mm metal sheet is the best option for the stool due to its flexibility and strength. The stool consist of 4 pieces of metal sheet which are manufactured by plasma cutting machine. Firstly, import the stool 3D file into plasma cutting machine, then machine will automatically cut out the form from 1mm metal sheet, so that the windmill stool is able to be mass-produced effectively. Secondly, all finished metal sheets will be processed into folding machine, this stage is for making precise angle of leg and component part. Additionally every metal sheet is connected by screws only, so that it is simple to be packed and delivered.

SPECIFICATIONS / TECHNICAL PROPERTIES:

RESEARCH ABSTRACT:
The idea based on a windmill toy as its three blades. The stool should be small size with colorful surface and can be arranged in different combination. After 1 :1 scale model by cardboard, I realized that the structure of stool can a bookshelf. So that I adjusted size and started testing different materials to find out the best way of making the stool.

CHALLENGE:
The junction between top and main body was the most difficult challenge. Wood and plastic material is weak because the sitting area only be supported by 3 sharp edges. Metal sheet is more efficient but welding technique could result in the metal stool distortion. I developed the windmill stool structure without welding or tacking after one case study from Prismatic table that using screws connect each part of metal structure.
