DESIGN NAME:
Tiles of Saigon

PRIMARY FUNCTION:
Book

INSPIRATION:
Saigon is a city with a unique yet neglected visual culture. Musing the city, one can come across beautiful architectures dated back from French colonial era (late 19th early 20th century). The exclusive aesthetics of these building, from the facade, to details like the signs, breeze blocks and floor tiles, have become the lost arts after the wars. New city development plans also mean many these buildings will soon be destroyed. This project is my attempt to document the abandoned beauties.

UNIQUE PROPERTIES / PROJECT DESCRIPTION:
"Tiles of Saigon" is a book design that captures & celebrates the neglected beauty of colonial-era floor tiles in Saigon, Vietnam. The publication contains a collection of 30 digitally rendered patterns originally coming from the artistically crafted floor tiles of old buildings and villas in Saigon.

OPERATION / FLOW / INTERACTION:
The book design is composed of 30 digitally rendered samples of French colonial era floor tiles in Saigon. Each spread has one page showing the tile design as a square, describing how it would look like standing alone while the other page showing the design as a seamless pattern. The ultimate purpose of the book is to allow the audience to experience the designs in both forms that they exist in present days, some of the floor tiles still remain intact over the years while others can only be found as leftover pieces.

PROJECT DURATION AND LOCATION:
Visual research (collecting resources and images of tiles) took a couple months. The actual design process took around 2 weeks and print production took 1 week. Location: Saigon (Ho Chi Minh City), Vietnam

FITS BEST INTO CATEGORY:
Graphics, Illustration and Visual Communication Design

PRODUCTION / REALIZATION TECHNOLOGY:
The illustrations / patterns are created using Adobe Illustrator then imported into Adobe InDesign for page layout. The books were printed in limited amount and by-order only. Covers are printed on 250gsm laminated matte papers, jacket & interior pages are printed on 150gsm natural white papers.

SPECIFICATIONS / TECHNICAL PROPERTIES:
Dimension: 220mm x 160mm x 8mm Pages: 60 (30 patterns) (150gsm, natural white paper) Binding: Perfect-bound Cover: Paperback (250gsm, laminated, matte paper)

RESEARCH ABSTRACT:
The research process for the book was a wandering journey hunting for the tiles. Initially, the project started out as a research and documentation project. Some of the findings were discovered during research trips to old buildings & villas in Saigon while others were collect by random encounters.

CHALLENGE:
The challenge was to select the tiles to include in the book so that the book eventually shows a wide spectrum of the antique tile designs.
