| DESIGN NAME: SELF - Origami Leather PRIMARY FUNCTION: Leather Bags INSPIRATION: The cost of leather, the cost of the leather craftsmanship is also expensive. Naturally, leather bags becomes a type of luxurious products, not to mention customised design. Our aim is to bring mass customisation to leather bags at an affordable pricing. UNIQUE PROPERTIES / PROJECT DESCRIPTION: Inspired by Origami, and self assembly box, our leather bags required no stitching. With our exquisite slotting system, people can have a simple hand on experience on making leather bags, without any special making tools. Also, the customization is achieved that people can freely choose their favorite color blocks and parts for combination on one bag, so the bags can have different size and combination. OPERATION / FLOW / INTERACTION: Inspired by Origami, and self assembly box, our leather bags required no stitching. With our exquisite slotting system, people can have a simple hand on experience on making leather bags, without any special making tools. Also, the customization is achieved that people can freely choose their favorite color blocks and parts for combination on one bag, so the bags can have different size and combination. New idea of DIY leather making is introduced. PROJECT DURATION AND LOCATION: The project started back in 2013. By the end of 2014, we reviewed it and modify the designs to cope with mass production. PRODUCTION / REALIZATION TECHNOLOGY: Normally, leather bags are die cut into specific sizes and then taken to the sewing machine. Our design uses the same die cut system, but we simply changed the die cut shape in to those that we designed. Our design uses the same machine and same cutting technique, but we simply changed the cutting shape in to the those that we designed. During the process of figuring out the slotting system, we also had to consider the size of each slotting module, it's thickness and it's stiffness. We also tired to appy the system to different materials such as plastic and corkwood; these version will be later implemented into out collection. CHALLENGE: In the field of architecture or architectural school, mass customisation has always been a hot topic, yet it is not the case in the fashion industry. We believe in a design that all users can bring their own personality in, and hopefully interact with it. We also spotted the fast rate of people changing their bag once its no longer big enough or out of trend. Thus we want to create a system where there is no bag, put pieces of origami leather that can be slot together base on your style, your need.
