DESIGN DETAILS
DESIGN NAME:
3D Crafts

PRIMARY FUNCTION:
Bowls

INSPIRATION:
My inspiration is related to my background. During my studies in Paris, I learnt to use different materials in order to be able to create and make a product. In Manchester during my Master I studied Product Design and had the opportunity to work with new technologies. My design ambition is to combine my different skills to push the borders of creation.

UNIQUE PROPERTIES / PROJECT DESCRIPTION:
I realized a set of three bowls, printed in three-dimensional ceramics. The shape of each bowls reminds traditional ceramics technique. With my bowls I create an illusion of a hand-made bowl with the design but also by the making process. It is a three-dimensional printing object which explores the link between traditional skills and new technologies.

OPERATION / FLOW / INTERACTION:
This object is printed with a three-dimensional printer. The printer creates the product layer by layer which allows the designer to create complex shapes. After printing, the bowls are fired in order to get strength and glazed in a shiny white.

PROJECT DURATION AND LOCATION:
The project started in July 2014 and ended in September 2014 at the Manchester Metropolitan University School of art. This project is a part of a MA Final Major Project presented in October 2014.

PRODUCTION / REALIZATION TECHNOLOGY:
The three bowls are realized by CAD, on Solidworks, and printed on a ceramics 3D printer. After printing, the bowls are fired and glazed, to get more strength to the product. Solidworks, 3D print, Ceramics

SPECIFICATIONS / TECHNICAL PROPERTIES:
Dimensions : Bowl 1 Diameter 65 mm , Bowl 2 Diameter 55 mm, Bowl 3 Diameter 40 mm

TAGS:
3D objects , crafts , ceramics , 3D crafts , 3D printing

RESEARCH ABSTRACT:
I orientated my research on the material. I was more interested by the material than by the shape of the object. I worked first on transparencies by playing with the thickness of the material. Then I combined my previous backgrounds in order to develop emotions and create a valuable object such as any hand-made product.

CHALLENGE:
The challenge of the design was to reproduce the feeling that people have when they see hand-made product. We can feel the passion and give more value to these object. For a 3D object, most of people will think that it contributes to create more waste and disposable products. The challenge was to change their mind and show that with a 3D printer we can create emotional and valuable objects.

NAME:
Alice Le biez

PROFILE:
Alice Le Biez is a young designer, graduated in 2014 of the Manchester Metropolitan School of Art. During her master, she explored the link between traditions and new technologies. She realized that with 3D printers allows designers to create complex shapes but at the same time, a lot of people don't give value to these objects because of the materials and the technique. As a craftman-designer, she believes that new technologies can be used as a tool to create valuable objects, full of passion, full of emotions. By combining her crafts backgrounds with what she learnt for a Master, she printed products which look like hand-made product.
