DESIGN DETAILS
DESIGN NAME:
Dry Wata

PRIMARY FUNCTION:
Towel Hanger

INSPIRATION:
The inspiration behind Dry Wata comes from a need for more creativity inside the bathroom and from the designer's ironic approach to everyday life. The combination of the two resulted in this paradoxical product that visually implies wetness but is actually used for drying. It was interesting that the most creative thoughts and ideas are sometimes born inside the bathroom, and yet not many creative accessories for that essential space of the house exist out there. This simple looking tube recalls the water tap but is actually a towel hanger. Its proximity to the wash basin and the real water tap emphasizes the gimmick that the towel looks like water but you can actually dry your hands with it.

UNIQUE PROPERTIES / PROJECT DESCRIPTION:
Dry Wata is a simple looking tube that looks like a water tap but is actually a towel hanger. Its proximity to the wash basin and to the actual water tap emphasizes the gimmick behind the concept of the product making it look like you're actually drying your hands with water. The hook system is designed to hold the towel's weight but easily lets it go when pulled out by hand. Several prototypes of the hook system piece were printed in 3D technology to achieve an efficient end result

OPERATION / FLOW / INTERACTION:
This witty looking towel hanger has a concealed hook system that makes it very easy to hang a small towel by a simple push of the index finger. This product is supplied with a set of small blue towels to give a closer impression of water running down the tap. While being very simple to use, it remains smart looking and is sure to bring a smile to your face.

PROJECT DURATION AND LOCATION:
The project started in April 2013 in Beirut and finished in June 2013. It was exhibited at the opening of the new WonderEight creative space in Beirut on the occasion of Beirut Design Week on June 2013.

PRODUCTION / REALIZATION TECHNOLOGY:
Chrome-plated metal and hard PVC accessories

SPECIFICATIONS / TECHNICAL PROPERTIES:

RESEARCH ABSTRACT:
Once the idea came to mind, a thorough online research was conducted looking for a similar product. After a few weeks and no relevant product in sight, research for materials and production processes began, noting that the industrial sector in Lebanon is very limited in terms of cutting-edge technology. So the combination of several workshops was necessary to produce the first prototype. A lot of care was put into the design and production technique to achieve a cost-effective production process to be able to produce a very affordable and durable design product.

CHALLENGE:
The challenge was to simplify the design as much as possible without compromising the creativity.

ABOUT WONDEREIGHT WonderEight is a Beirut based design agency, working for international and local companies who like to challenge their customers and want to be different and daring. Benefiting from their cultural diversity, they innovate in the fields of branding and visual communication. Their strategic location in the gate of the Middle East allows them to bridge between western and eastern brands and to create concepts that work in their environment while introducing new ways of cocreation. Founded in 1999 by Nasrala brothers Boudy and Walid, today, with Karim Abourizk also on board it gathers a handful of highly skilled creative designers, web developers and marketing strategists who enjoy a bespoke work environment, made to inspire and interact with the local design and art community. This creative space regroups a design agency, a prototyping workshop a facility for trainings and talks, a handpicked book library and an art exhibition space. This multifaceted environment keeps on renewing itself and creates a constant synergy between the WonderEight team, their clients, and the public. PROTOTYPING WORKSHOP An experimental lab where designers design and prototype objects, prints and accessories they’re inspired to create. It’s equipped with tools and machinery to handcraft and realize our ideas from sketches to prototypes, whereas the bigger pieces are produced in neighboring workshops of the industrial city they’re located in; a perfect harmony between their design company and its surrounding environment. WORKSHOP GALLERY Workshop gallery is a new independent exhibition space for contemporary art, hosted within WonderEight’s premises to complete the building’s gestalt. From its modest 14.3 sqm, it puts the emergent Lebanese and international artists under the spot light, in a mission to encourage the diversity and experimentation of art in the region. THE LIBRARY WonderEight’s workshop also includes a handpicked library of the books that inspire the team. It is open to the public for rental and is constantly updated. These books cover design as well as photography, architecture, marketing and more. E/ROOM TALKS AND TRAINING A facility where WonderEight’s team members give talks and trainings to visitors, covering subjects from their work experience. It also hosts guest speakers and tutors, with access to all the building’s facilities. The E/Room programs are open for all applicants and are constantly updated on WonderEight’s website. The E/Room is the first room to use Cedarenv.com‘s EcoBoard® and is mostly built from recycled and recuperated material (42 eco-boards equivalent to 153,972 supermarket plastic bags). The roof also collects rainwater in tanks, with which they water their garden.
