DESIGN DETAILS
DESIGN NAME:
WS-51

PRIMARY FUNCTION:
Slipper stand

INSPIRATION:
In the most Asia culture, people take off their shoes in the interior spaces. This custom is also applied to public spaces such as a private hospital and model home. Mostly in these rooms, slippers are stored in the hidden condition like a slipper closet. In this regard, WS-51 design was started to change the thought from ‘Store slippers in the invisible space’ to ‘Slippers itself become a design’. At the same time, the research began to find the fastest way to use slippers and the tidiest way to arrange slippers.

UNIQUE PROPERTIES / PROJECT DESCRIPTION:
The design started to make slippers itself become a design rather than hidden-stored. Thus, compared to normal slipper stand, it is more stylish design, inspired from wave, pebble and island. Functionally, it has the easiest and tidiest way to store slippers according to the research, and separable design makes easy packing and storage. People can participate in the design with changing the arrangement of maple rods and colorful slippers. Wave design also enables free design to extend.

OPERATION / FLOW / INTERACTION:
The maple rods are fixed in the 70mm depth hole without using glue. Therefore, it is separable and provides easy packing and storage. Also, people can redesign upper part’s flow with changing maple rods’ arrangement. The design is changed moment to moment when people are changing the colorful slippers’ arrangement randomly. Lastly, according to the required slipper number and arranged space size, wave flow enables free design to extend.

PROJECT DURATION AND LOCATION:
The project started in February 2014 and finished in June 2014 in Seoul. And it was exhibited in Hyundai gallery in June 2014 in Seoul.

FITS BEST INTO CATEGORY:
Furniture Design

PRODUCTION / REALIZATION TECHNOLOGY:
The long rod is made of maple because it is elastic and neat beige color against colorful slippers. Oxidized steel is used for the base to give hard feeling of pebble and enough weight for the center of gravity. To keep the slippers facing front as shown in the concept sketch, anti-rotation was designed. Round bar is ended up with narrow rectangle in the upper part. And in the lower part, the groove is applied in the rod and male part in the steel base is matching with the groove.

SPECIFICATIONS / TECHNICAL PROPERTIES:
The overall size of WS-51 is 1100(W) x 200(D) x 990(H). As the depth of slipper rack becomes narrower, the possibility of disturbance to passer-by is lower. Therefore, its design was proceeding within 200mm depth. Due to the inspiration from the wave flow, the design is free to extend sideways, according to the required slipper number or arranged room size. The base size is 350(W) x 150(D) x 90(H). Its size is also minimized with streamlined shape as far away as possible from feet.

Research study with survey/the spending time to use & store and the satisfaction about usability, tidiness, and style were researched by 5 rating scale method to apply the result into the design/Research study/After use actual 5 types of slipper stands, fill the survey sheet and SPSS 12.0 used/Random sampling from 100 people/Hanging slippers on the rod was the fastest way and received highest score in usability, tidiness and style/The result will be applied for WS-51 in the exposed condition

CHALLENGE:
Korean government has lead Korean Renaissance such as the law ‘One building with one sculpture’. However, still there are many things to be styled and slipper stand was chosen as a beginning. In the most Asia culture, people take off their shoes in the interior spaces and mostly slippers are stored in the hidden condition like a slipper closet. In this regard, WS-51 design was started to change the thought from ‘Store slippers in the invisible space’ to ‘Slippers itself become a design’.
